Hi guys...

ok just got 2 new goldfish.

turn out they have ick... not too much... (i didnt even notice in the pet store). around 3-5 small tiny specs...

anywho. i got them out right away and in the sick tank.

question is... now i want to make sure none of the ick will infect my main tank... how do i take care of this? i have 4 goldfish in there now.

i just did a water change yesterday. and prior to that change. all water paramaters are normal...

please help ASAP.

p.s. i normally put them in a sick tank for observation. dunno why i didnt this time... i suck!

If youve already had them in the main tank then both tanks will need treatment.
The easiest way is to get a heater for both tanks and then slowly raise the temperature to 84f. With the water being so warm you will need to add extra aeration. Keep the temperature lifted for 6 days after the spots have gone.

oh i forgot to mention that the sick ones were only in the main tank for 5-10 minutes.

but i guess its better to be cautious, i will do as suggested.

I will salt the tank.

p.s. just for my peace of mind. i have UV in the main tank. this might decrease the likely hood of infection right? i mean i had this huge outbreak last year. wiped out my stock. then again 2 months after that... but i caught it in time and that was also the time where i bought UV to supplement the salts. (UV makes a difference or coincidence i dunno know. but it didnt wipe out my fish).

It decreases the amount in the water (depending on the strength of the uv) but it won't touch any that are already on your fish. Salting is a great idea smile.gif

update.

The main tank has been salted. the old residents have no spots whatsoever! biggrin.gif

the new fishy are doing well in the sick tank. no spots now. i have them on ich medication (gosh i cant remember what) but that thing works great.

Will keep them there for the rest of the week... following the medication's label. then will give them more days before actual transfer.

seems like everyone is happy.

thanks JenW and sandy!
