I think it depends on the type of snail but I'm pretty sure for any type of snail the water has to be pretty warm. At least in the mid to high 60s. Snails don't really do much for algea anyways. They'll only eat it if there is nothing else to eat.

Bristlenoses are great for algae removal. If you don't see either rubberlips or bristlenoses in your local fish stores, you should ask if they can order them in. That is how I got one of my bristlenoses.

Plecos need warm water, so you'll have to bring them in for winter. I had little snails in my pond. The biggest problem with them is they get into the pump and mess things up. They have no problem surviving the winter. I wouldn't advise you to put snails in your pond. If you are having a string algae problem you can try some koi clay. It works sometimes. Other than that you can up your pond salt which kills it or you can shade your pond. If you just have little short algae on the sides and bottom that is really not a problem. In fact it helps with the pond cycle. The algae digests the nitrates which are made from nitrites in your biofilter. You do not want to have nitrates because they can cause blood problems in your fish. Plus the fish do eat the algae which is good for them.
