Full Version: Question About Setting Up Uv Sterilizer

I'm currently cycling a 40 gallon aquarium and am interested in purchasing a 25W Aqua UV sterilizer or Aqua Medic 36W, but would like to have an idea of what kind of assembly is required before I get it online. I was under the impression that I would just have to cut my outlet tubing in half and connect the UV sterilizer in the middle. Is this correct? Also, my filter tubing is 1" in diameter but the sterilizer's fittings are 3/4", does this mean I will have to buy an adapter? I really have no idea what the set-up entails at all. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks! (also, my tank is acrylic and only has a partial opening at the top, if that's a factor at all)

For reference, here are the sterilizers:

Hello and Welcome to Koko's!!

I am by no means a UV expert (but hopefully parkerdt or daryl will come along soon) but I would like to say that I have the Aqua UV 15 watt for my 90 gallon tank and it's doing a superb job!! I e-mailed the company to see what size they would recommend for my tnak to kill parasites and they said 8 watt. Since the 15 watt was the same size, I figured the more the merrier and went with the 15 watt. I originally looked at the 25 watt but that one is longer and would have involved some major stand modificatons. And after having not only the company but a few other sources recommend the 8 or 15 watt I went with that. The Aqua UVs do a great job.

That being said, all I know as far as installation is that it needs to be mounted horizontally or vertically. I have it hooked up to my canister filter. So it goes intake from tank--- >filter--->output from filter--->UV--->back to tank. My husband mounted it (horizontally) on a board inside the stand. We needed to get some clamps to hold the hose on and also more hose so there was enough hose to reach back to the tank.

Anyway, I know that isn't really much help but my husband did the actual installation. I'm sure someone else will be along soon to help.

And, again, welcome. rolleyes.gif

I agree completely with Fantailfan1. exactly.gif

15 watts is enough, and plumb it from the output of your cannister. Yep, yep, easiest way to do it if you don't want a powerhead hanging in your tank...
