Hi All,

Shopped around for baby brine shrimp and haven't had the luck to find one and my fry are going one by one and currently left with 7 fry from 15.

Been feeding them Hikari First Bite and they do seem to love it. I clean them up after 20 minutes by siphoning the left/untouched food at the bottom and on top of the tub. I add more water in, chlorinated and same temp as their current by siphoning it back in slowly...air bubbles to the minimum, plant still there and 2 - 3 of the fry seems to just lie on top of it by the surface.

My tub is too small that if I add the filter in, it will definitely blow them around. I haven't even got to their first week yet and I've only got 7 left.

Apart from the small tub, no filter and baby brine shrimp....what else am I doing wrong or are those three the major problem.

Sorry to hear that you've lost some fry Hope.I think that's kind of par for the course though. The weak/sick fade out and the strong survuve.
Well,at least you have them eating the first bites.Their nutrution is so important right now.Their future has alot to do with genetic's and such, but alot has to do with the first 165 days of their lives too.
I really wasn't concerned about the 14x14 tub you were using.I thought being newborn that it would work for a bit.How many inches of water are you keeping in there now?
I know that you're feeding and doing water changes, but are you actually testing their water for param? It may be that there's not enough being changed?Hard to really say as it's a guess without param #'s.
Hope the other little guys will hang in there.
hope28
Two inches of water, is that ok or shall I make it three inches. They just seem so small for a deeper water....but again...what do I know.....

What is param?

I thought that maybe adding chlorine was good enough 'coz my older GF does not seem to have any problem with it. Also...may I ask what is "cycling" of water?

Sorry, I feel like a real useless person right now
Devs
Don't feel useless, especially when you're taking the time to ask questions and learn.
Params are what we call it when you test the fish water for Ammonia,Nitrites,Nitrates, etc. Water can look clear and fine, but everytime the fish eat and produce waste, the toxins of those build up.By testing these levels,it gives you more of an idea on how much water you need to change out to keep it completely safe for your fish.
Well as to how much water the container should have.....Well let me tell you this, most threads about fry babies seem to keep their fry in about 6 inches of water. Not realizing that because I never read much about fry, when I hatched Won Ton,my baby Oranda,I had him in an Eclipse 1or2 gal, with the water all the way filled up. ohmy.gif
I've had tons of other babies but Won was my first goldfish. smile.gif Luckily for myself and WOn,he thrived and did well.I also kept alot of live plants in there as well-to shelter him,to help break the filter strength, and for him to find a resting place.
I guess if it were me,I would probably add more water to the container. This part is scarey because the fish are so vulnerable ,but I think they need more water. You'll have to add it very slowly of course.Maybe each time you clean the container, add extra water until the level gets higher-to more where it needs to be.
hope28
Ok...just fed them this evening. Some are at the bottom not going for the food. Will get some aquarium testers tomorrow. I shall also add more water as you've suggested. Maybe an inch and a half to make it 3.5". WonTon must be a really strong GF....I hope some of mine are a fighter, too.

My GF just made lots of eggs again this morning, poor "Nanay" was chased around by three boys...I had to get the 4th (Black Moor "Yabang") inside a hatching net, he is the biggest and was really aggressive to Nanay.

Anyway, I left the eggs for them to eat...I don't have the resources to hatch anymore yet until this batch I've got right now turns successful.

My husband just got back from biztrip and he thinks I am too obsessed with the fry (apparently, I stayed with the fry for 3 hours straight without noticing).

Thank you again for the support Devs. I'll keep you posted on my fry soon.
hope28
One quick question.....can I get my Neritina into a fry tub to help clean up the mess (old food and plant algae)? Or is it bad for the fry? boom.gif
hope28
Hi All,

An update this afternoon....all gone. cry3.gif My tester came a little too late. This morning, at least one was still swimming around.....

Devs
sad.gif Hope I'm so sorry after how hard you tried, for you to lose all your fry. The only thing that you can do is not dwell on it,and realize the positive things that you have learned while experiencing this.
If there is a next time Hun,you now know more than you did. Keep your chin up. heartpump.gif It's really hard-there's so much to know in so short a time.
hope28
Thank you Devs. I decided to clean up the whole flat than dwell on the lost of my fry. I was devastated but did not want to cry 'coz my husband makes fun of me... rolleyes.gif

I took my neritinas from quarantine and put them together with my GF this evening and they are so happy. There they are munching away on the glass of the aquarium for algae. smile.gif

Also, I decided to clean the GF filter and give them some "Bio-Booster" that supposedly helps with Ammonia and Nitrites. I will have to get some equipment to measure all the stuff you mentioned earlier in this forum topic.

Remember I told you that my GF "Nanay" made more eggs yesterday and I had them eat them instead?.....I found about 18 eggs with eyes already peeking from eggs attached on the white fibre. I hurriedly used the real aquarium used for quarantine (small...about 10"length x 5.5"width)...put in the new filter I was supposed to use for my old batch of fry that just died this evening and in with the air bubbles and 4" of water.

Transferred all the eggs with peeking eyes into the aquarium and my husband was totally happy for me and he was like "quick, quick, put them in the aquarium!!!

I just hope they will be okay....I know it is still not the perfect aquarium but at least, I can monitor everything from the see-through glass. As per your advise, I made sure the plants will help with the filter and air bubbles being too harsh on them.

I will be going to "Mongkok" again tomorrow...where I get most of my supplies for the fish and fry and try and see if I can get somebody to help me find "baby brine shrimp" ready for their 3rd day feeding.

I have a funny suspicion that the "Hikari First Bite" I've got is not for GF fry but for tropical fish fry instead. Although the lady who sold me the product told me that GF fry eats the same thing.....what do you think?

Apart from the above....one of my GF is not doing very well right now... if he's not at the top of the water trying to breath through the bubbles, he is very still at the bottom of the aquarium or in his favourite cave with his head just hanging at the top of the cave...you know what I mean? I will have to get another hospital aquarium, transfer her and nurse her intensively.

I never thought this hobby was going to be so hard...I hope I don't get too stressed as my husband and I are planning for IVF in September. Gosh....
Devs
blink.gif Wow Hope, your fish don't stop! That's great that you allready have eggs and eyes-amazing.

As for the Hikari First bite,I have used that for every kind of baby fish that I've been lucky to have.It is fine for the goldfish fry, especially if you are having trouble finding brine fish eggs to hatch out.
Over here,we too also have frozen food that we can buy-Brine shrimp being one of them. They come in flat pkg.'s with cubes that you pop out.I have seen regular Brine shrimp-along with Baby or Newly hatched Brine shrimp. Have you ever seen any frozen foods that you can look into? Not as good as live Brine shrimp of course, but definately better than not feeding them at all.

When you go looking for fish supplies, make sure that you do get the drop test kits for Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrates etc. that is really a must for it doesn't take but a hint of bad water to kill those tiny little fry.
I am glad that you haven't let the sad experience bring you down, and that you march on to attempt it again.
Hopefully this time around will be a more positive experience. smile.gif
And once I get you through that, then the next stage will be,"Oh no,now what do I do with all these fish?" ignore.gif rofl3.gif
But let's go one step at a time here. biggrin.gif

Oh I am sorry to hear that your goldfish isn't doing so well. You may want to start a seperate thread in the Disease/Diagnosis area. There will be a bunch of questions up above. If you can answer as many as you can, maybe we can give you an idea on what is going on?It may be something as simple as a water change, but we'll have to see.You know how it goes,"When it rains,it pours" krazy.gif
hope28
I just found out the reason why it is that my GF make eggs so frequently (I read this on Koko's just last night)....when the temperature of the water in the aquarium goes up to 30 degrees celsius...I put a fan on specifically for aquariums, that takes it down to 25 or 23 degrees celcius and when I turn it off in the evening when I go to bed...the next thing I know, they are chasing the lady(s). ohmy.gif

I stopped switching the fan on immediately.

I will get the supplies as per your suggestion before I start on the other thread. Hopefully I get everything I need by tomorrow. smile.gif

Thanks again for your help.
hope28
Hi Again....

idont.gif One question....how long do I leave the food in with the fry before siphon it away? I don't want the water to be too contaminated with uneaten food.

Thanks.
Ranchugirl
Whenever I see waste/poop on the tank bottom, I syphon it out. You don't have to do it with every single dropping, otherwise you wouldn't be doing anything else all day long... rofl2.gif
I'd check it daily, and go from there.
hope28
Thank you for responding Ranchugirl...I use to siphon every single thing on my last batch (whom did not make it) and yes...I was there ALL day.

It gives me a lot more pleasure looking at them swimming around now than stressing them out with my siphon going in and out of the water biggrin.gif

smile.gif How are things going Hope?

I thought I might be posting too much...so I had to stop on this topic for a day or two. Thanks for asking, btw...

It's my fry' 6th day today. Got about 4 dead last night and I see 1-2 more this morning that are getting mouldy at the bottom. cry3.gif

I see about 3-4 swimming around for food. I do not know why it is so hard to get fresh brine that needs hatching or "sea monkeys" (which I read from koko is the same as fresh brine - I used to hatch them when I was a little kid...don't seem to find them anywhere anymore...maybe I am not looking hard enough!). I am off out again early afternoon today to find it.

Also...the other thing that I still have not found are the test kits!!! The only thing that I can get is a bottle of "Bio-Booster by AA Quality Counts" made in Australia. It contains high concentrated selected natural microorganisms responsible for establishing and maintaining biological action necessary for cleaning fresh water naturally. It apparently eliminates the build up of organic wastes (faeces, uneaten food and other dissolved organic debris as well as toxic ammonia and nitrite).

Keeping my fin(gers) crossed... Still worried to bits
Devs
blink.gif Hope ,this place is here for posting ,especially if you need help or have questions that you need answers to.You can post as often as you'd like. wink.gif Man that would be sooooooooooooo frustrating ,knowing what you needed and finding it nowhere.
What about frozen food for fish?Do they sell any of that? MAybe you can find Brine Shrimp that way?If you do see it,make sure that it's baby brine.
I'm sorry that you're still losing fry-it must be making you feel awful, but you gotta realize that for what you're capable of doing,YOU ARE DOING the best that you can.I try to look at it as if."If it's meant to be,then so be it".I have to admit that even thinking like that doesn't lesson the disappointment or the pain.
And these test kits, who would think that in this day and age,it would be so hard to find them... krazy.gif
Is there anywhere that you can order from "On line"?
hope28
Woke up this morning and found only ONE - ONE again!!!! 26th Aug - New Eggs, 27th Aug - Hatched...around 20+, today-1st Sept -> ONE! blink.gif

It must be me!!! It's the way I clean them...not clean enough. Must be it! They were all strong swimmers.... cry3.gif

I took the last one out very carefully by putting in a small tub for it to swim inside. Cleaned the whole ###### aquarium...took all the plants out (I can never see through them anyway...they're always on the way). Cleaned the filter and air bubble thingy...put some new water in and "voila" so far so good and it's late afternoon now. Cleaned his water each time (s)he's finished eating which I give him/her an hour to do so.

My GF made new eggs again this morning!!!!! NO WAY am I going to hatch anymore until this one survives...it's a real pain in the "you know what"...I have no more time for myself and my cats are getting jealous and unhappy. My whole body ache especially my legs from siphoning (standing up), chairs makes it more uncomfortable...blah blah blah.... ignore.gif

Happy that I still have one to go smile.gif ...I think I've got it....I think I know what I have been doing wrong...it's the water after their food. I don't clean it enough and when night comes...they stay at the bottom of the aquarium...they get infections or something from the food that's left behind...MUST BE.

I'll keep you posted on my last fry.....it MUST work this time around krazy.gif

hope28
Other thing....My husband found me a "Freeze Dried Brine Shrimp by Artemia". I was like..."that's it! that's it! Get it! Get it!" Looking at it now...I think they are not "baby" brine shrimp!

Other stuff I feed them/him are the "Hikari First Bite" and "TetraMin Baby" (not sure if TetraMin Baby are for how old fry though)...

I definitely would go out to other shops tomorrow with my mom to look for all the stuff that I am currently missing in my "TO GET LIST"...phew... wacko.gif

hope28
Hi Devs, Just an update...Found some brine shrimp/sea monkey to hatch. Just started putting the eggs in the water last night...still nothing hatched this morning.

My last little fry, I believe is doing ok. Still alive. I also found some test kits.

Will keep you updated. For now...I'll look around and post some stuff about my GF that is getting a really bad tail rot and also about hatching brine shrimp.
Devs
Sorry to hear that you lost so many Hope but at least you're hanging in there.I'm guessing that it was probably the water quality that did it-it doesn't take much with the fry being so tiny and vulnerable.
Wow,it's great that you finally found the Brine Shrimp eggs. They take around 24 hours to hatch-give or take a few(all depends on the temp).I think once they hatch, that the baby fry will grow quick munching on those. biggrin.gif
Keep an eye on water tests,,and match all water temps.Finger's are crossed for you. exactly.gif
hope28
Sorry it took me a while to get back to you Devs. I was not able to get back in into the forum for a good few days and I had Koko help figure out what was going on and only today that I found out that it was my computer that went haywire on me. All I needed to do was reboot the whole thing.

Unfortunately, I lost the last fry. I had some baby brine hatched but when I gave it to the fry...it was not responding. It was only then that I realized that it was dead cry3.gif I don't think it actually ate any of the food before...I don't know...but the water was definitely good. (I've got the test as well...)

I am currently concentrating on all my GF instead and will not be going into fry hatching for a while.

Just would like to take this opportunity to thank you and everyone for your help and support during the past few weeks.

I will come back to the site from time to time to ask questions...(I'm sure).

Hope to have more chat soon... biggrin.gif

OldHag
I'm sorry you lost your fry, that happened to me to the first times I tried to raise fry. Now I've ended up with 6 oneyear fry and about 15 2-3 month old...
Devs
Fry is always something that most people really aren't set up/ready for,but when it happens, you can't help but get so totally excited about it all. smile.gif You can always go that route another time though Hope, when you really have the perfect timing and set up for everything. You've had such a struggle through this all, just trying to get tests, food, etc. all together-so definately give yourself a pat on the back.
Don't wait until you have questions though-join in any time you want, just to get to know everyone. biggrin.gif
And by the way, when are we going to meet your goldie family? yeah.gif
hope28
Hi Devs,

I don't seem to get the email to let me know there has been a reply on the topic but glad I popped in to see what's going on at Kokos.

I would love to put a picture of all my lovely GF but don't really know how to do that. I now know from this site alone....that I have 1 black Moore, 1 Fan Tail, 2 Orandas and 1 comet. Unfortunately, my sixth little tiny "Liit" Nemo (an Oranda) died yesterday cry3.gif . I was devasted, as well as my husband but we were glad that his suffering is now over and I hope he is in Fish Heaven heartpump.gif .

Nope, picture can't be copied and I don't know how to use the URL stuff. rolleyes.gif

Devs
smile.gif Hope,You can join up at Photobucket.com.It is free, and it's rather easy to download your pic's.Believe me,if I can do it,any one can.Once you do download your pics, you'll see them with three sets of #'s under each pic.If you highlight the third oneright click copy, then come here and paste, you'll see your pics..I'm very sorry to hear that you lost your little oranda. heartpump.gif

Here's a picture of all my lovely GF taken about 10 months ago. All six of them are still in these pictures. I will upload my new ones soon. I am looking around for more pictures to download for Kokos.

hope28
Here they are again....striking a post for the camera biggrin.gif

Devs
biggrin.gif Very nice Hope!!! I don't know though,in that pic your "Fantail" looks pretty much Ryukin like to me with that hump of his. biggrin.gif Very pretty fish.
hope28
RYUKIN! Wow...I did not know that tongue.gif .....LOL rockwoot.gif

I'll send some more of the latest when my husband comes back from his business trip. He borrowed my camera... tongue.gif
Devs
I don't know, the fish is angled weird but between the fins, and the hump above his head area,he just looks like he has Ryukin in him.I had a Chocolate Calico Fantail that slowly over two years has turned mostly orange. He too looks as if he had a Ryukin Mommy or Daddy. rofl3.gif
hope28
This is my last picture post of the day. Here you will see my ryukin a lot more clearly. As you can also see, my blackmoore is smaller than my ryukin but now...my blackmoore is a total of 9" long (incl. tail) and my ryukin is only about 5.5" long with tail. My oranda (I shall post a picture next week of him) is as big as my ryukin now. The lady (not sure if she's oranda or a comet, will send pics) is about 4" and my comet is about 5" long with a nice flowing long tail.

I am so excited that you and everyone can see their pictures now on the forum biggrin.gif

IPB Image
Devs
I adore Big Black Moors! heartpump.gif
And your Fantail,is definately a Ryukin!!! They look big/happy,and healthy. Thanks for sharing.
FinnyFinnedFriend
I Looove your fishies, they are gorgeous!! I am a moore fanatic myself!! Sry about the fry problems. and I hope everything is going well with you and your cats and your fish!
hope28
Thanks FinnyFinnedFriend,

The pictures are quite old. I will post some new ones next week on how they are this time (minus one). And I am having a tank made (14"H x 48"W x 17"D) soon. Which should be ready in three weeks time. happydance.gif
FinnyFinnedFriend
Sweet, lol, Where are you having the custom made at?
hope28
There is a place in Hong Kong at Prince Edward Road where a street is store after store of pet fish, aquariums, accessories, etc. I found a place that custom makes aquarium to anyone's liking.

For the size that I asked for...it will cost me around HK$1,328 (US$170.25). It comes together with a cover and lighting. I will have to choose the filter for it that does not include in the price. biggrin.gif
FinnyFinnedFriend
Arrgg sooo jealous!! How long have you had your moor? I am trying to raise mine to grow to their full potental, But I must not be doing something right
hope28
Actually, all I did was transferred them from a small tank to a bigger tank (the tank you see on the picture(s) is the bigger tank. The tank before that was about 16"w x 8"d x 14""h and I started feeding them "peas".

Apart from that, I changed their water on a weekly basis and started talking them every time I pass through their aquarium (going "how u doin' kootchie boom booms" or "you little naughty bum bums") biggrin.gif

Sounds wacko.gif I know. My husband gets boom.gif or hah.gif at me sometimes. But my fish.gif are happy.
FinnyFinnedFriend
Hey I talk to my fish too, sometimes they are the only ones who listen lol!
hope28
justtoo.gif Same Here. But I think my cats listen to me too most of the time
hope28
Hello All,

I will not be posting under "Goldfish Breeding" for a while but I promise I shall be back one day and hope to be successfull with this smile.gif

I have started posting pictures instead at the Goldfish photos forum....check it out!

Thank you all, especially you Devs for supporting me on the breeding topic. heartpump.gif biggrin.gif
