I have a 10 gallon with 4 tiger barbs. Had a divider and had a betta in 1/3 of the tank, which died this morning. Just wondering if I can get anymore barbs in there or am I at the max. It has 2 silk plants and two smaller cave type decorations in there with gravel, knowing the barbs need room to swim.

Well I think if you remove the divider, you could have 6-8 Tiger Barbs in a 10 gallon. Just keep changing the water by 10% every other week.

ok thanx. Just did a major water change to make sure that whatever the betta died of would not affect the barbs. I will go in a couple of days to get more barbs. Will there be a problem of adding more at different times, with aggressiveness. I was thinking of trying to find 4 more of a different type of barb, would that work. It is a small tank so no problem with keeping up with water changes.

Please take a look at minimum tank size

Definately do not add other types of barbs. While most barbs are peaceful, tigers can be very aggressive. Sandy's right, you really should keep the tiger barbs in a larger tank. I'm guessing their not adults yet? As they get older they will become more aggressive toward eachother and other fish.

Yea, with tigers they start out peaceful and small, but when they reach their adult size (about 3.5 inches)... I would think you're about at your limit with them as it is if you don't want any aggression in the tank.

Also, I'm sure the rest of your barbs are fine (without knowing anything about your set-up), but keep in mind that there are some things that can kill a fish that a 10% water change won't get rid of; so keep an eye on the tank if you don't know what befell your betta.

I missed ONE water change and everone is acting like I never do any maintenance. I know all about water changes, that is why my goldfish are 4 yrs old and still alive. My betta was sick of something else not from the condition of the water. Missing 1 water change is nothing compared to some people's maintenance or should I say non maintenance of their tank.

Sorry about last post. I am cranky today, teenage son driving me nuts, literally. I am going to take off tomorrow and spend the night away from home to calm down.
So would 4 green barbs and 4 tiger barbs fit in a 20 gallon?? If so I can get one in the middle of next month
Is there any small cichlid that can go into a 10 gallon tank. I already have goldfish, pufferfish, tetra tank, angelfish. Don't want any bettas right now, what some type of cichlid or show fish that would be good in the 10 gallon when I buy the 20 or even 30 gallon tank next month.
Ponderosa Power
Its okay love goldfish, we've all got bad days. By "4 green barbs" do you mean green tiger barbs? You can mix all varieties of tiger barb together with no problem, its keeping small numbers of adults together, or keeping tigers with less aggressive fish that can cause problems. 8 tiger barbs would be great in a 20 gallon smile.gif I'm not too good on cichlid species, so I'm sure sandy or others can help you out with that.

Sorry, I should've clarified. I didn't mean anything about you missing a water change or your maintenance at all. I just meant that a water change wouldn't clear out ich or a bacterial infection or something like that; which I'm sure you know already.

that's ok balashark. I was in a bad mood so I probably didn't read it properly, No worries.

I had a Tiger Barb tank for years. They killed everything I put in with them-even other Barbs. They're like little sharks as they grow bigger and older, and when you see them in the LFS as these cute tiny little fish, you wouldn't expect it. My guys lived for years, and grew huge.As bad as this may sound I kept thinking," I thought Tropical fish didn't live this long?" blink.gif krazy.gif When the last one died,he was a little over 8 years old.
I know some have had good luck with them, and other fish, but me,Well as I said,it was a Tiger Barb tank. laugh.gif

You definitely are going to want to move your tiger barbs into a larger tank. I've seen well kept ones at 4" and they're very active.

For the 10, you may want to consider some smaller species of killies, Endlers or, if you're heart is set on cichlids, you may want to look at some of the smaller species of shellies. Shelldwellers can be fascinating fish and you could easily keep a few in a 10.
