I read everything about the quarantine procedure, salting, etc. I bought a calico fantail that is in a 10 gal quarantine tank. I usually feed my goldfish regular ProGold, but should I feed him MediGold just in case he has anything? Or just wait and see how he is doing? I plan on keeping him in there for four weeks. Too long?

I usually quarantine for 2 weeks as usually fish show symptoms of disease within a week to 10 days if they are carrying anything.Only feed medicated food to a sick fish as if you feed it during quarantine the fish may build up immunity and the medicated food wont be any good when you need it.Best to just salt tank and observe only treat if signs of disease appear

I have to disagree and say that 30 days should be your qting period. Many things can take longer to show up.......some parasites.
I would though hold off on using a medicated food. But I would treat for parasites whether I seen symptoms or not. And keep the salt in a full 30 days. JMO.

Both are good points! i would wait 30 days (just in case) but as for the med food thats realy up to you some like to feed them medicated food just in case but othere prefer to not med intill absolutly needed. neather will "hurt" the fish.

Yeah, I agree with Laurie. I always quarantine for 4 weeks too, I don't think 2 weeks is a long enough period to be sure they are clear

4 weeks is a minimum as i've learned at my cost. Laurie's right, parasites can take several weeks to show themselves and can lay dormant until conditions change. I quarantine for 2-3 months now to be on the safe side so would do 1 month as a minimum

As much as I want to add him to my goldfish family , I'm gonna stick with the 4 weeks. Thank you everybody for your excellent advice.
