I found a brand of canned peas believe it or not that are salt free. They are the Wlywoold Brand. I found them at my locl discount grocerer here in St. Louis. They are made by a company in Coldwater , MI. called Alliance foods. It says on the label "premium no salt " . I found this hard to beleive since they were canned peas but I looked at the ingredients on the back label and all that is listed is peas, water and sugar.
The nutrition fact label on the back says
Calories-60
Total fat 0.0g- 0%
saturated fat 0g- 0%
cholesterol-0g- 0%
sodium 10mg- 0%
total Carbohydrate 11g- 4%
Dietary fiber 4g
sugars 6g
protein-3g
Vitamin A 6%
Vitamin c 15%
Calcium- 2 %
Iron- 8 %

isnt sugar hard for gf to digest though? other than that it sounds great.

you could always rinse it off . I think the sugar is added probably to the fluid in can. Probably if you rinse them before cooking and feeding to the fish you would be fine.
katmad
there are natural sugars in fruit and vegetable, that's probably included in the analysis. I doubt it's all, if any, added sugar.

sodium 10mg = 0%

Thats confusing as it says 10 mg but no percentage as sodium is salt
mrbumblebee
10 mg would only be a trace amount of salt, very little indeed. Still, it should probably say trace and not 0% if that is the case, but that would make it practically unsalted anyway smile.gif

On general mills website, I looked up their Green Giant frozen green peas b/c they do not say whether they add salt or not to the package, on their site it says a small trace of salt. Is that ok?

I am thinking if you rinsed them well it would be.
mrbumblebee
Most foods naturally contain a trace amount of salt, so I would have thought that would be fine smile.gif
sandy
I doubt a trace of salt would harm them. The reason we say frozen is better is that canned peas have sugars in them and they do go through the food and rinsing wont help.
mrbumblebee
I agree with Sandy, overall frozen peas are better for feeding to fish, but canned peas can be more convenient for some and this brand seems OK smile.gif

I think so too. Cheaper as well. I think I only had to pay around 50 cents for them And you could save the rest of the can in a ziplock bag in your freezer. I got to thinking and maybe the small amount of sugar is actually the peas themselves. Peas are a carbohydrates and thus a sugar. So maybe the sugar they are counting are the peas themselves. I don't know. I had some for lunch yesterday and did not taste any sugar. Just thought I would let you know about them as an alternative. And since it is summer here in the US and Canada I was thinking you could probably find plenty or organic peas that your could clean and store in freezer ziploc bags for later and in the winter.

Can you please not type in all caps, its very hard to read and comes across as shouting. Thanks

You do have to shell them but I don't think you have to cook them because they are already cooked. Just rinse them off very well before giving them and make sure there is no added salt.
