I just transferred my 2 orandas from QT that had dropsy back into the main tank. They havent been in there more than 1/2 hour. I was taking pics of the calico to post here and I saw blood coming out of his tail!! It looks like a piece was broken off SOMEHOW and now hes bleeding. I dont know what to do. I just took the stupid QT tank apart too. Could this have happened when I netted him? There is nothing in the tank that could do this. All the other fish are disabled and cant see well so they are very docile. Since the tank is salted, will this hurt the wound?
Blue
If its anything like when we get salt in a wound then it probably would. How bad is the bleeding. If you have some meth blue if you can handle your fish put some meth blue on a Q tip and put some on his wound it will help prevent disease getting in smile.gif As meth blue is a good antiseptic for wounds and damaged areas on fish.
glitterfish
Its not bleeding horribly but I can see it coming off into the water. I feel so horrible. cry3.gif I dont have any meth blue. Maybe I should set up the QT again?
Blue
bighug.gif maybe just put him in QT till it heals a bit so the others don't decide to take a nibble.Better to be safe. You could treat him with melafix in QT to help prevent infection.
glitterfish
OMG I found the piece of tail at the bottom!!! It had to of been my fault. Poor Pudgey. sad.gif
Blue
Hope its not a big peice of his tail. bighug.gif Pudgey will be fine he has you as his owner.Just make sure he's treated with an antiseptic to prevent infection and check tank for anything sharp.Plastic plants can be lethal I'm in process of getting rid of all my not so soft plastic plants.
glitterfish
Yeah its a pretty big piece, maybe 3/4 an inch!! He seems to be doing OK though. Looking for food and swimming around. I think it stopped bleeding. I have the QT back up just in case. I only have fake bamboo in the tank. Round pebbles at the bottom. I think I did it. sad.gif
froggydella
Aw No Erin! Poor Pudgey....I'm sorry. Even if you did accidently bump his tail when you were taking him out, It wasn't un purpose hun.

I know Iv'e heard of some people using an antibiotic cream and applying that with a Q-Tip. I hope he get's better soon. heartpump.gif

bettaqueen
So sorry about your fishie. I have put neosporin on a q-tip and put it on wounds before. The salt should help it heal. I would keep the water pristine as well. you might do as suggested and put her back in the quarantine tank by herself to heal with some salt in the water. Less chance of the other fish bumping into her or picking on her already damaged tail.
Trinket

Yes salt is effective for wounds Erin. It stings for people but it has healing prperties so dont worry about that. The neo-sprin is also good on a qtip-I would say if he's finished in QT this is an accident and he can stay in the tank as long as the other fish are not going to nip on the sore part (thinking its food ).
glitterfish
Thanks guys. He is still in the 55. Looks like the bleeding stopped. Im keeping an eye on him now. Is .2% salt too strong? I was going to up it today and I notced a small amount of tail fungus on my ryukin.
Trinket
If your ryukin is acting normally a very small fungal patch should heal with perfect water and feeding medigold or crushed freezedried krill. If it gets worse or the fish starts to isolate himself or act strange then you may need QT and meds. Increasing aeration- not current though-will help. I think both fish will be okay with .2% salt smile.gif
glitterfish
Thanks Trinket! I have the added salt. Now its a waiting game. smile.gif

Erin, you have been having terrible luck with your fish lately, but I am glad the dropsy twins are out of qt! I have had two of my fish have pieces torn off their dorsal fins, and while they did not bleed all I did was salt to .1 % and keep the water perfect and they healed wonderfully. So with .2% salt and maybe some antiseptic as others mentioned, you should be fine I would think! gudluksn.gif
glitterfish
heartpump.gif Thanks Jen.

It just looked so horrible. I feel awful. I feel a little better that he is scrounging on the bottom for food like a normal goldie though. smile.gif
Trinket
Scrounging around on the bottom for food is a very good sign indeed laugh.gif Fingers crossed and don't feel guilty, he'll mend smile.gif
JenW
Hi Erin, I think he should be fine smile.gif My large telescope had 1/3 of her tail chopped off as a result of rough play from one of my males and the bleeding stopped and she's doing real well. Just excellent water and salt as the others have said should be all that's needed smile.gif

Trinket
Also Jen what about the bamboo plant Erin has in there, I was wondering if that will be okay with the salt?
JenW
As a rule, I always remove all plants when salting. There's some that do ok in 0.1% but my java fern and anubia's all kicked the bucket at a level of 0.1%... I just wouldn't risk it smile.gif
glitterfish
Theyre fake plants guys. smile.gif laugh.gif
froggydella
How's the patient doing today hun?
glitterfish
He is doing fine. Its no longer bleeding and he ate breakfast. smile.gif
froggydella
That's good new's!! smile.gif I'm sure he'll heal up fine for you. Careful once he get's better he might take revenge on you and bite your finger!! laugh.gif

But really, Im glad to hear he's doing so well today.
Blue
Great glad to hear he's going to be fine bighug.gif Told you you had a couple of fighters plus you are the best owner they could have wished for exactly.gif
Devs
smile.gif No sense in feeling guilty, sometimes these things unfortunately happen. As mentioned though he'll heal nicely with the salt and pristene water.Feeding always makes me feel better .I figure them eating is always a good sign. smile.gif
glitterfish
I agree Devs!! Stuffing my face is always a good sign(or not?!). rolleyes.gif

Aww thanks Blue. You are a sweetie. heartpump.gif

Della... I fish taking revenge... Thats a scary thought isnt it?! laugh.gif
Trinket

Glad all is well Erin smile.gif
JenW

jen626
