When I went to feed my 4 yo betta, Swimmy, I noticed the top portion of his body and fins have turned a dark grayish color and it looks awful. He's also kind of tilted a bit when he swims.

He was fine when I went to bed last night.

What could be wrong and how do I treat it? I know he's lived a relatively long time for a betta and I've been preparing my ds (it's actually his fish) for his eventual passing, but we're not quite ready to let him go, yet. sad.gif

TIA!

Thank you, Blue, for the links. Swimmy didn't make it, though. cry3.gif That was way too fast, less than 15 minutes from discovering something was wrong. sad.gif

Now I just have to tell my ds. He's only 9 and absolutely adores Swimmy. cry3.gif:

Oh dear Lisa, that is really sad news sad.gif I'm sorry you lost Swimmy so fast

I'm not really sure what it could have been from your description. Maybe it was just his time to go sad.gif

Thanks, Blue and Mrbumblebee. My ds took it really hard. We've both been crying off and on all day (the rest of the family thinks we have gone bonkers to get so upset over a fish).

It took most of the day for ds to accept that Swimmy was really gone. He kept a vigil by the tank and kept asking me if I was sure, really sure, Swimmy had passed away. sad.gif

We ended up having a nice little burial. Ds was adamant that Swimmy be buried in water, so we placed him in a small zippy bag full of water and then in a nice, paper towel cushioned box with a lid. Ds made a cross of popsicle sticks and wrote Swimmy's name and today's date on it.

He picked out the spot in the yard and dug the hole himself. That was a hard thing to do. To watch. cry3.gif:

Even I am a bit overwhelmed at how sad I am about this. Ds has had Swimmy for over a 3rd of his life and this is his very first experience with the death of a pet.

Today really bites. sad.gif

I'm really sorry you lost your pet. I too lost a very special betta a couple days ago, I know how you are feeling. A 3rd of someones life sounds rather long so maybe it was just his time to go so whater you do don't put any blame on yourself or anything.
