I really enjoyed having my first fish tank. Unfortunately they all died. Since then I have learned quite a bit. I want my next attempt (whenever that is) to be successful. Please help me out...

Here is my idea of the perfect, low maintenance, high quality tank system for goldfish with my current knowledge. Please please use your surperior knowledge to improve mine cos I really want to know how to grow HUGE fish one day when I can afford it....

That actually looks pretty good. I'm not sure about the feeding 6x a day, but with the water changes being every day that shouldnt be an issue, except if the substrate was gravel it would need a gravel vac nearly every 2 days biggrin.gif but barebottom should work.
I was reading something similar to this somewhere else, where there would be a slow trickle of water going out the tank and a slow trickle going in through a DIYed RO unit. Clever idea.. but I wouldnt be want to be the one trying to make it all work!

4x a day is best then? I get the feeling when fish are totally full they do what we do which is go to bed....rather than excercising.

Yeah it would be a nice lil project though. Would do it in a garage with its own water supply or something.

Yeah I think its gonna be bare bottom for me in future im afraid. I found that the gravel pretty much was responsible for my fish's death (that and lack of 'enough' filtration). No matter how much I cleaned it I could never get rid of all the brown stuff that was under there.... ill.gif

This pretty much is a theoretical model though to illustrate my current understanding of goldfish requirements.

Provided I kept the stocking low (3 in a 55gal for instance) could I grow BIG fishes?? rolleyes.gif

Ps) I have noticed that goldfish in the pet store are all 'runts' none of them will ever grow big cos most of them are rejects from breeders and half are already stunted. People keep saying get fish from a veritable breeder. Where can I find one in the UK? How does it work?

I thought about that feeding thing.. and goldfish are grazers so in the wild they would eat small ammounts continuously all day. So 6x is actually better. But you would have to feed small ammounts each time so as not to completely stuff them. To have a steady flow of food through them.
It depends on genetics and other stuff, but with low stocking and constant (as close as) supply of food, you have pretty good chances of big fish!
It isnt too hard to get a reasonably decent fish here. If you have a maindenhead aquatics store near you with a coldwater section they will probably have some good fish in. Most fish in shops are the 'runts' or breeders culls, but that doesnt mean they dont have the potential to get huge. Some of the fish will have been rejected by the breeder for minor imperfections, like a ranchu with a lumpy or kinked back, or an oranda without much wen growth. But those fish could grow up to be big healthy perfect fish, especially with all the water and food you would be providing!
I dont know about half of them already being stunted.. I haven't really had much experience. But there are plenty of UKers on here with big healthy pet store fish.
About finding a breeder, I'm not at all sure about that. You could find out if there are shows or clubs in your area to go to and get in touch with breeders etc. or maybe ask at a good LFS.

lol I guess I just mean stunted as in they havent been cared for by myself as fry. I would always be asking myself if they had spent their first few months in rubbish conditions...

Yeah the as much as you can eat 6x a day is a lil extreme I must admit!!

It's funny really, I have done a lot of reading up but my only experience is of disaster ;/

I am glad to see that I am not a million miles off with what needs doing cos I have discovered that keeping goldfish alive is hard enough let alone growing them big and colorful...

It would be great if the treated water tub/tank can hold at least 50% of the fish tank's volume. Bigger and more often waterchanges is best.

Wow I am learning so much from this!! biggrin.gif

Yeah what I was thinking was having one of those tank stand things and keeping the reservior hidden away in a smaller tank under the main tank next to the powerfilter lol!!

One other thing I wonder about is how to keep algae down....This seems to be the main problem with this low maintenance idea and one I have always had BIG problems with.... 406.gif

try getting a light for your tank

Less light and less photosphates ( Think it spelt like this )

Not enough light will cause algae, Try getting a a light for your tank hood.
