Full Version: Using A Tv Stand In Place Of A Tank Stand

I am moving into a new apartment on Sunday. The complex is 30 years old and my apartment is on the third floor. I have a 28 gallon tank, which is relatively small as tanks go (you guys all know that..) and I am putting it on a TV stand. It's pretty heavy, like a normal TV stand. I noticed most tank stands are really light and flimsy. So is it bad to put the heavy tank on a relatively heavy TV stand?

The tank is currently on my really really old coffee table. I can put it on that if all else fails. I can just watch the fish and TV at the same time.. haha.

Anyways.. I'm taking a U-Haul one way, so any advice either way would be appreciated. I don't know whether to take the TV stand or not. I'm stuck with it if it doesn't work out because it doesn't fit in my car.

Thanks!

Well here's an idea, figure out exactly what the full 28 gallon tank weights. then see if the TV stand will hold that amount of weight (ie sit on it or have a couple of people sit on it) some times even if the stand looks well put together it can trick you. And usually any thing made from compressed board will give out eventually. Having your tank on it, if it gave out would be bad.

good luck with your moving.

The TV stand or table may well take the weight and support the tank very easily, the only caution I would say is that if your tank is relatively new and/or is still under warranty/guarantee you may invalidate the cover if the manufacturer produces a custom made stand for sale and you don't use it. Also check your insurance cover.

I'm not saying don't do it, because lots of people on here use alternative items as tank stands all the time without any problems at all. Personally, I don't.

Just maybe something to keep in mind.

Good luck with the move smile.gif
