Hi everyone,
I'm learning so much from this site. I am in the process of returning to fishkeeping after a two year hiatus. I have goldfish fever, but have only ever had tropical and saltwater in the past.
I have set up a 37 gallon Eclipse tank (has the bio wheel with HOT filter) and added an Eheim 2213 canister filter (having read about how dirty goldies are here). I set the tank up a week ago and bought four danios yesterday.
My question is whether the filtration seems adequate (I also have a bubble pad) and how many fish you think I could have in the tank without having to upgrade (the danios will go once it's cycled).
Thanks!

Hi and

.With the size of tank you can have a maximum of 3 as each fish requires at least 10 gallons of water each if they are fancy goldfish,comets/commons require 20 gallons each. You seem to have adequate filtration.

What are the dimensions of the tank? It being tall or long or whatever has a huge impact on how many fish you can have. I would say in a tank that size two goldfish would be best if you never want to upgrade. It will take awhile for them to fill it but eventually they will if they are healthy and well fed. I would not go with any commons or comets, they are very large, fast and messy. You would have to upgrade if you went with commons. The fancy kinds are the way to go, if you get a smaller breed like the telescopes you can probably get away with three. With larger breeds like the orandas I would only go with two.

Do you have the Eclipse tank with the Eclipse 3 hood?
If so, the filter in the Eclipse 3 hood does 250 gph and the Eheim has a pump output of 116 for a total gph of 366. They should handle the waste of 2-3 smaller fish quite well. Just make sure to keep your eye on the water parameters as the fish get larger.
sandtiger, I believe the tank she has has the same width and length dimensions as a 29 gallon tank but is a few inches taller. If that's the case, I would also recommend 2-3 fancy gf rather than the longer faster commons/comets.

Thanks for getting back to me! Fantail fan is right, I have the Eclipse 3 on a tank that is a few inches taller than a typical 29 gal tank. I didn't know the GpH of the Eclipse--I couldn't find it in my documentation, but I had a hunch it wasn't enough.
I was going to stay away from the comets and common and even orandas, since they can get huge (1 ft., I've read). I am partial to veiltails and ryukins as well as the demikins. Now I just have the boring part--waiting for the tank to cycle with the boring danios in it.
I'll let you all know when I get my fishies.

You'll have to take a look at some of the Ryukins around here. Daryl's "Sterling" comes to mind-for he is huge!

Don't worry about the danios, guys. My good friend has a 75gal tropical tank and wants them. So they will be going to a good home in a few weeks.
I wanted to try fishless cycling, but I couldn't find any non-sudsing ammonia.
What kind of fish is a veiltail? Is it a kind of ryukin or a separate variety. I have been looking at fish on line (fantasizing) and don't see "veiltail" as a category.

Veiltait is a type of finnage. Any type of goldie can be a veiltail. They have nice long flowing tails

Heres a pic that I found on a google search
http://www.aquanovel.com/images/peces/veiltail.jpgIf you never want to upgrade I would consider just going with two fancies. Three would really really be pushing it and would be cramped once they reached their adult size.
