Full Version: What To Put In A 55 Gallon

I have a 55 gallon tank that I'm temporarily using for some koi. (They'll be gone by late this summer most likely)

But after they're out, I'm going to have this huge, empty tank. So... why not some goldfish? Problem is, I don't know which type to choose. Preferably something that probably isn't going to need a pond for a LONG time. I'm not interested in the bubble-eyes (they're cute, but I want something else) and the ryukins aren't my cup of tea. I love comets, but I know they're more of pond fish than aquarium fish.

What I'm really looking for is something unusual but beautiful. I love telescope fish and black moors, but I'm always concerned those salespeople are going to give me fish with bubble-eye, or that somebody is going to come into the house and tell me my fish are sick. Orandas are nice too, but all of our retailer's orandas have SBD.

So, what I'm really looking for is something fancy, unusual, that won't cost me $100 for a single fish (I'm not looking for show quality), and it doesn't have to be bright.

However, I would like to know how many telescopes, moors, or both I could keep in the 55 gallon.

Anybody care to help out? Any suggestions are appreciated. heartpump.gif:

u can have up to 5 goldfish

I'd be concerned if I had five goldfish that they would become too crowded when they get bigger. Would three be an okay number?

You can keep 5 fancy goldfish in a 55 gallon.Hows about Lionheads or Ranchu's.You don't have to have 5 just 5 is the max number you can keep. smile.gif

Right now I have two fish in my 55 gallon and that's all that I'm putting in there, the less fish you have in a tank regardless of the size of the tank, the less waste and less waste means easier to control water conditions. But really it's up to you and three sounds like a great number. I have an oranda and a pearlscale in my tank, but my favorite goldie was a large orange telescope, she was so funny.

How about a couple of orandas. Maybe a panda oranda.Ranchus or liondheads like the other mentioned. Black moors. Kind of up to your preferance. What you like best. One thing to keep in mind though is if you get fancy goldies -ie: orandas, ranchus , lionheads etc do not put any commons, subunkins or comets in with them. The comets, subunkins and commons can swim faster and will gobble most of the food up before the fancies can get it. because they swim slower. Also commets, commons, and subunkins can get large ,

I'd still have to say my favorites are moors and telescopes, but I'm still concerned about those telescopes being normal goldfish with pop-eye!

Any other suggestions would be great.

You should be fine getting a couple telescopes or Moors for your tank, if that's what you really want. I think they're adorable, too. ^^

It should be fairly easy to tell telescopes from popeyed fish. Fish with popeye have a ring around their eyes, from what I've seen...there's a picture on the disease page if you want to see it.

Thanks, that link really helps! I'd love to get a mixed tank of black moors and telescopes. They would all look different, and it would look nice. I'll probably stay to the original three. I'm going to get a lot of plastic plants and rocks and make it look beautiful, hopefully. I'll figure out a design scheme later. smile.gif

I have four fish in my 60-gal, one moor, one oranda, one lionhead, and one dojo loach. I really love the moors.

How about fantails, they are typically cheap and common. They look a lot like orandas but without the wen. You could also try pearscales, personally not my favorite but some people like them. Pom poms are also interesting but i don't see these (or pearlsales) often in my area. As for numbers, 3 would do fine. That way is you slack off a bit on water changes it won't be as vital as it would be if you had 5.

Bubble eye is cute.Lionhead and ranchu is interesting, Oranda is Beautiful, Fantail is nice, black moor is good for FENG SHUI....

When you went into ur LFS, u should have ur answer ^.<

My mom and I have decided on getting a moor and a telescope for the first two, and then adding a third one later.

Thanks everybody! Now... design ideas would be interesting, if anybody wnats to throw an idea in.
