Full Version: I Finally Got A Girly

Ponderosa Power
I went to volunteer at the luv-a-pet at my petsmart and I couldn't help looking at the bettas. I'd already convinced myself I wanted a girl. The girl I saw a few weeks before wasn't there, but I saw two that were just as pretty. One was a red and white cambodian and the other a peacock blue. I picked out a 3 gallon kritter keeper and put their cups inside and kept them with me the whole day. I couldn't decide!! I wish girls got along okay one on one. It took me 5 hours, but I finally decided on the blue. She's such a little tomboy and flares at the boys and girls too! She's acclimating right now. I have big plans for that tank of hers, you guys will see. I'm just a tad worried about her...she seems pretty plump and has what looks like a healed scar on her side. When viewed from above, you can see a single indent where it is. Hopefully she's just fat from food and her scar won't cause trouble. Yay! New fish!
Anic
Yay! Girlies are just as entertaining as the boys! Congrats on the new fishies!
Ponderosa Power
She's in her new 3 gallon! It actually looks pretty nice right now. I didn't expect it to because I just used a bunch of plastic leftover plants, a broken pot, and a rock hall thingie. She looks scared, but I think she will like it in time. She needs a name still! I was planning on blossom or clover, but those names don't really fit her.
Sushi67
Congrats on your new girl! She might be fat with eggs. Its crazy how fat they get when full of eggs. I've recently bred 2 of my girls so they are back to normal but the girl that I didn't breed is huge with eggs. When mine are fat with eggs they poof out more on the sides, like a preggy pony.lol.

Do you have a cam? Will we be seeing picus of her?
Ponderosa Power
So I'm assuming that if they are eggs, she won't release them without a male? Will it hurt her to keep them in? I'm kinda worried because there is a little bump on her side near or on the old wound. I can't see it unless she's turning, and she turns quickly.

She's already compltetly settled in! I checked five minutes after releasing her into the tank, and her stripes were gone and she was cruising around the tank. I've never had a fish adjust so quickly before. I'll get pics soon, maybe tomorrow smile.gif
Sushi67
She shoud be fine. Eventually they will get reabsorbed by her body. My PK girl got fat with eggs while trying to breed but she had to go and be mean so I never fully bred her. Stuck her in her bowl while she was fat with eggs and about 2 weeks later her belly went back to normal.

The bump might just be part of a an old scar. It could also be a tumor. Don't worry about it too much unless it gets bigger or she gets sick.

I don't see why she wouldn't. I mean a 3 gal is a lot better than a cup. laugh.gif I bet she loves her new home and mommy.

I can't wait for picus.
glitterfish
Congrats on the girlie!! How about Storm or Rain for names?
Ponderosa Power
I hope she's alright unsure.gif I'm glad she settled in quickly though...hopefully she'll tolerate a nano filter.

I like these names so far:

Stormy
Pitter (like the sound of rain..pitter patter)
Tulip
Juniper
Echo
glitterfish
I vote for Stormy! smile.gif
Sushi67
I like Juniper. smile.gif
mrbumblebee
Congratulations Kissy! She sounds lovely and like she'll have real character too. I like Juniper as a name as well! Pictures please! please.gif
Anic
Ooh, I like Juniper!
bettaqueen
ohh congrats Kissy. I have been wanting a girlie too recently. It sounds like you got a really pretty one.
Blue
Congrats on your newfish.gif. I like the name Storm.Hurry up with the pics yeah.gif
kristysweets
Congrats on the new girlie! I'm sure she will be very happy with you as her mom smile.gif I like Stormy
Ponderosa Power
It looks like its pretty even between you guys with the names Stormy and Juniper. Thats good because those are my two favorite names of the bunch. Maybe once I get a photo up she'll be easier to name.

She ate this morning, yay! I fed her one of Orchard's Hikaria Betta Bio Gold pellets. She didn't take notice for a good 10 minutes, but when she found it, she did eat it. Whew, I don't want to be buying live or frozen food for my fish.

She's sitting on my art little art drawer tower thingie...its one of those rubbermaid organizers with all the drawers. I like her there because it balances the other tanks in my room but I will have to move her soon. Once I'm confident she's all settled in and relaxed, I'm going to move her up by my male, Orchard. He'll have a kick out of getting a girlfriend, and maybe having a friend will discourage his self mutilation rolleyes.gif I want to try my filter with her and she'll need a heater when winter comes and there aren't any reachable outlets on the other side of my room.
mrbumblebee
I'm glad she's settling in well, so Orchards got a girlfriend then! yeah.gif

Will be interesting to see if his behaviour changes now he has a lady to impress biggrin.gif
Ponderosa Power
Ehhh she's not eating anymore :*( She would chew and chew for more than 5 minutes, then gave up and spit her pellet out. Pleeeeeaasssee don't be sick. Hopefully she's still adjusting.
bettaqueen
depends on how long you have had her. My male took almost a week to start eating. Or she could just not like that food in particular. She could of ate it at first because she was hungry and now that she has eaten has decided she does not like it. Bettas can be picky eaters. Mrbumblebee told me to only give my male the same pellets for the a couple weeks till he got used to them. Maybe she is still adjusting to her surroundings and food.
Sushi67
Is it possible that the pellets are too big for her? Do you soak them first?

Sometimes if I haven't soaked the pellets my smaller bettas can't get them in thier mouth on the first try so they let them float around till soft and then they attack them again and can finally eat them.
Anic
Have you been giving her the Hikari Betta Bio Gold pellets in the 'baby' size? That's what I feed my Bettas and even my tiny female can eat those. And she's about an inch long.
froggydella
laugh.gif Ok-What's this telling us about a new Girl with no pic's buisness Kissy?!!

Congrat's!

Yah. The first pellet was soggy, squished, and sunken. I guess I'm not 100% sure that she ate the first one. I looked away for a second and looked back at her. The pellet was gone and in its place there was a pretty blue girl. The second pellet she got right away and I hadn't soaked it. By the time she spit it back out it wasn't really solid anymore, so I'm sure she could have swallowed it. Another minor thing is her fins. I noticed that her tummy and ventral fins were looking a bit raggedy. There are actually holes in her little ventrals! I'm sure clean water will heal that, but I'm mostly concerned with the tiny lump and her distaste for food right now.I'll try not to worry..I just have a bad history with new fish.

One good thing though! CO2 has been added to my tap pH so it starts out at about 7.5 and slowly rises up to 8 over the course of a couple days. 7.5 is what the pH usually is at the petstore, so the acclimation will be much easier on her.

I can't find my mom's camera!!! Sorry you guys! I'll have to wait until tonight or tomorrow. She's a pretty little thing though, with little brown eyes heartpump.gif Do female bettas have different shaped heads than males? I noticed that she, along with the other girls at the store had very petite, tapered faces. My big goofy male's head is much bigger and contured, but maybe its the age difference because he is a year older than her.
x-Lucy-Fish-x
YAY biggrin.gif pics pics pics! She probably is just adjusting and getting used to new food etc. heartpump.gif
bettaqueen
my male won't eat them if they are soggy only if they are crunchy.
Anic
Same with mine, Bettaqueen. They only eat them if they've just been dropped in.
FishCrazy
i might put a betta in my 10 gallon tank. smile.gif
bettaqueen
That would be cool. he or she would love all that room to themselves.
Ponderosa Power
Well whaddya know. Stormy (finally decided) doesn't like betta pellets. She preffers Omega One's Tropical flakes rofl3.gif I crumbled a couple red ones because fish see red the best, and she pretty much ate them all. Now I just gotta get my other new fishy to eat. Do you think sparkling gouramis would like betta pellets? She won't eat, but she's a shy little thing and I've only had her for a day. Maybe I'll try some daphnia tomorrow.
goldfishlover10
Congratz on your new girl!*cough pics* smile.gif She likes flakes? *cough pics* Hmmm......i dont think the gourami would like betta pellets but it may *cough pics* work.
bettaqueen
Kissy since Stormy likes tropical flakes did you know that Omega One makes a flake betta food? It is called Betta buffet I believe. They have it at petsmart over by the betta stuff. It is made out salmon and fresh seafood like the goldie omega one. Might try it for her
Ponderosa Power
Thanks Bettaqueen smile.gif I'll compare the ingrediants next time I go and see if there's a big enough difference. I'm pretty low on money now since I got a debit card lol rolleyes.gif

I got photos of stormy today! Now I just need to find the camera cord...hopefully I will have them up by tonight. I took some of orchard and some of my tropicals too.

I'm really not sure of Stormy's sex now. I came home to find what looked like the beginings of a bubble nest!?!?! I think I remember hearing in rare instances, females will build a nest, and I don't think its too odd that a female will flare....but its pretty strange, isn't it? Why do I always end up with the wierd bettas? Lol
Ponderosa Power
PICS are here!!! smilie_staub.gif I had a hard time with the new camera but I'm starting to get the hang of it. Its annoying because it makes a lot of fish eyes look strange. Isn't stormy such a pretty girl? She's a little more of a deep blue than her photos let on, but there is some tourquise.

Pretty little brown eyed girl heartpump.gif

IPB Image
Stormy and her temporary set-up. See the "bubble nest?"

IPB Image
See the hole in her ventral fin? Her other has more. Do you think its okay?

IPB Image
Fat with eggs?
Ponderosa Power
Here are some of her boyfriend, Orchard. He's such a goof.

His ventral fins came unstuck! He had really messed up fin rot when I got him and they were completely crumpled and bent. One was even bent in half, and it fused together like that as it healed. You can see in the second pic that it is still very bent, but at least its no longer fused together.
froggydella
WELL! Finally we get to see some pic's! Geeeez.. laugh.gif

Stormy is very pretty Kissy! She looks happy in her new home. I absoluetly LOVE that 1st pic of Orchard! FUNNY BOY. heartpump.gif

Congrat's hun. happydance.gif
mrbumblebee
Stormy is very pretty Kissy!

Despite the behaviour, I think she it is a female betta due to the general body shape and shorter than short finnage, also the ventrals are very short to be a male, others may disagree. Also, in the the thrid picture of her, there is a little white spot on her abdomen behind her ventral fins (may just be in the background or the tank glass) - is there any sign of an oviduct/ovipositor ever being prominant Kissy? Whatever sex it is, stormy is really lovely, congratulations again!

As for the little ventral fins holes, I think they are probably water quality related and should heal up on there own with the great water quality you will provide.

The famous Orchard! He is lovely Kissy, just soo cute, a real character I bet! biggrin.gif
Ponderosa Power
Thankyou for the comments guys smile.gif

Bumble, yes thats an oviduct. Its usually very prominent but it did not show up in some of her photos since her body was at an angle. I think I've heard of in very rare occasions, males can have oviducts. But I think she's just a tomboy. She decided that she likes Daphnia today rolleyes.gif

Does anyone know what kind of betta she is?
Anic
She's probably just a Veiltail. I could be wrong but all my girls' tails looked like that.
Sushi67
The holes could be fin rot but since you haven't said anything about them getting bigger or it popping up anywhere else it could just be from bad water quality. She ish very beautiful. I love her tank. Your are great at decorating.
kristysweets
she's a beauty kissy and I love orchard too heartpump.gif one of my girls had a whole in ther dorsal fin when I bought her and she was fine
balashark
found it smile.gif

Very pretty bettas Kissy. Glad to see orchard is doing well.
x-Lucy-Fish-x

She's boootifull! heartpump.gif

It's difficult to tell with female bettas, but I agree with Anic, I think a veiltail as well. She is a very pretty colour Kissy smile.gif
bettaqueen
Good pic taking Kissy and I just love Orchard too. handsome man he is heartpump.gif
Torbe
Oops I started to post then I realized you had named her.Congratulations !
Stormy is a beauty. I have had the which fish do I take one time too many and I have almost ended up taking more than one( especially since one of them was a pink Cambo female and the other was a red. white, and blue male) unfortunately my family had to put up with whatever I got and they prefer male bettas to female) I have since still wished I could have taken both.
