how low does the temperature in your tank go in the winter? mines goes down to about 60.

I was just thinking of asking the same question, hle_81. It seems colder this year. My tanks were 66 degrees on Sunday. My fantails seem to be enjoying the water more than my fancies, but... how can one really tell? I feed only ProGold so I'm not too concerned about digestive trouble. What do you feed?

I keep a heater in my tank in the winter time. So my tanks dont go below the 74F mark biggrin.gif

biggrin.gif Thanks Koko. I've always wondered if my tanks were at the right temp. I too have a heater and keep the water at 74. I feel much better now hearing that you too like 74, its as if God said Right On! rolleyes.gif

If your going to let your tank temp drop down over the winter make sure it
stays close to that temp. If it starts going up and down all the time, your
goldies might get stressed out. Plus, your fish may decide it's time to make
new fish. blink.gif If you would rather not have new fish eggs in your tank, it
would be suggested to maintain the tank temp at a steady spot. I keep my
tanks in the 74-76*f range. The warmer temps help keep their immune
system at a higher level and aids in their digestion. That, and they won't
get frisky(wink, wink). lol.GIF

Sudden temperature change can cause problems with Ph levels as well if I remember correctly, my tanks are also a constant 74 degress!

Temp swings don't cause pH problems.

well my temp never goes below about 77F (25C) at its coldest in winter and i've never had a heater, then again i live in australia smile.gif tank temp now is like 93F (34C) tongue.gif fish dont seem to mind though. I reckon i could evaporate the tank in a day if i left the lid off smile.gif

australia is awesome for fish, even tropicals here i dont reckon you'd need a heater, well not where i live anyways, because well.. i live in a home among the gum trees, with lots of plum trees, a sheep or 2 and a kangaroo, a clothes line out the back, verandah out the front and an old rockin' chair! CHA!
