I understand that the 1-3 inch Black moore & fantail goldfish that you see in shops, really grow up to be like 8 inches! Most people who see these little fish dont realize this, & buy them. I want to buy 4 goldfish that are only 1- 1 1/2 inches and keep them in a 5 gallon "plastic" aquarium. I am going to ask for a tank kit for Christmas. The one that has a 5 gallon plastic tank with a black plastic hood, complete with a light & a filter & everything. I only have the room and the time for this size of tank & this size of fish. BUT, here's my problem, I REALLY, R-E-A-L-L-Y want to get 2 black moore goldfish & two fantails(either calico or orange & white), but I only want 1-2 inch ones. Sooo, you guys tell me what you think of my idea:

rolleyes.gif I will buy the little "baby" Black moores & Fantails that are only about an inch long each, and then when they get to be around 2 inches in length, then I will either trade them/sell them for the 1 inch ones again. What do you guys think??? B)

(I really DO NOT want common or comet gold fish = ( that's why I got this idea)

ALSO, about how long do Black moores and/or fantails take to reach 2 inches from the time they are 1 inch??? And what special cleaning or care do I need to do in order to mank a tank set up of this size work???

Thanks you guys!!! I just want your opinions to add to my decision.

I don't think that idea would work very well. For a start your tank would still be overstocked even with tiny fish. Secondly, goldfish grow impressively quickly! I bought a tiny 1 inch panda oranda 4 weeks ago and he's doubled in size already so you wouldn't be keeping them for very long at all if you did what you are suggesting.
Also, isn't the point of having fish to get to know them, enjoy them and let them get to know you? You'd just get attached to a couple of fish then a few weeks later they'd be back off to the lfs. I know for sure that I couldn't do that! I love all my fish dearly and would be heart broken if I had to sell them or give them away.
Thirdly, what iof no-one wanted to take them from you? You'd be stuck witht hem in a 5 gallon, and they'd live short and miserable lives.

If you want something that small I suggest getting a betta or a small school of guppies. These are impressive fish and they should grow out of your tank. A 5 gallon tank with 4 goldfish is just simply too small. I seriously do not suggest doing this. I hate to be rude but in all honesty doing something that that is pretty irresponsible. Getting something just until its 'too big' and then getting rid of it? And then getting more? That's the reason there are so many young adult dogs and kittens in animal shelter. People only want them when they are small and cute. Then they're too big and no one wants them. I'm glad you at least did a little research before jumping into it, but please, do not do this. Your best bet would to just get something that is small and will stay small. That way they will always be happy in the 5 gallon and you will be a good fishy keeper! I'll stop off of my soapbox now, but I really feel that that had to be said.

Sorry friend, but I agree with Fishyfan and sourmilknightmares 5gals is not even enough for one goldie. If you only have roomfor a small tank stick with the tropical fish.

Thanks for the replies guys!!!!! biggrin.gif I'll have to think about this one (what other kind of fish i'de want)

My friend has the CUTEST "baby" black moore, and it is in a ONE GALLON ohmy.gif plastic tank with a filter & hood & light & everything!(it may be like a 2 gallon or a little more, but from the looks of it I 'd guess it was a 1 gallon)! I dont want to be rude to her or anything, but what should I say??? huh.gif She bought 2 & gave one to her LITTLE BROTHER!!! I havnt seen his yet, but I'm guessing he has it in a BOWL!!!! Probably the one he had his beta in who DIED because he cant take care of things!!!

Well tell me what you think I should say, Thanks again guys!!!

Maybe you could try nicely telling her that that fish is going to get huge and probably won't be able to live in that small tank forever.

As for fish for your tank I really do enjoy bettas. They're really personable fish, especially the females, and the more room you give them the livlier they seem to be. I have one of my girls in a 2 gallon hex and she loves it. Whenever anyone come in the room she immediately starts swimming and dancing around. I have her on my night stand and the light on it makes a good reading light too!

You could also try a paradise fish. I hear they're pretty easy and seem to thrive in a tank 3-5 gallons in size.

There's always a small school of neon tetras and maybe an oto or other sucker type fish.

The possibilities are virtually limitless. Just check around and you'll find something you'll love!

i do not agree with this idea. im sorry to be rude, but first, you are accepting a responsibility to take care of these fish, so what? youre just gonna trade them in? trust me- you will get attached to these fish and just "giving them up" will not be easy for you at all. there is not one person here who doesnt love their fish and would have a hard time giving them up if need be. second. why dont you focus on keeping ONE fish healthy, in a 10 gal, instead of keeping 4 healthy in less than desireable conditions? it sounds to me like you need to rethink your priorities.

UPDATE: (about the friend who has the "baby" black moore in a 1 gallon)

It IS a 1 gallon, not larger. I told her that those fish get really big, she said she knows that they can get atleast 6 inches long, and I said yes, maybe even 8 inches. She said that her boyfriend has one that is like 6 inches long in a H U G E glass fish tank (he is the one who gave the fish to her, he could only afford the small tank at the time) She says she is going to get a larger tank when she can afford it & her fish gets a little bigger. As for her little brother, he DOES have his baby black moore in a BOWL! But it is NOT the bowl that his betta was in, the betta is still alive.

Thanks for the help guys. wink.gif
