White fuzzy substance on fins
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Koko,

Got a goldie that has fuzzy stuff on his fins. I think it might be fungus, but I'm not certain. I bought a product called 'fungus eliminator' made by Jungle Products. Have you ever used this stuff? And can it affect the tank cycle?

I know I have to remove the activated carbon per the instructions, but there's no information on the effect on the tank cycle.

Let me know if you've ever used this stuff.

Thanks,

Leo

Yes it will affect the biological filter and is rather harsh on the fish. As a first treatment I would try Melafix or possibly Methylene Blue.

Ya I would use the Methylene Blue witha Q-tip swap and add Aquarium salt to the tank. This would be a safer way

Thanks for the quick reply, Koko.

So Are you saying I have to take the fish in my hand and swab his tail and fins with a q-tip containing Methylene Blue? Also, does this medication stay on his body after you reinsert him into the water? I've never tried this stuff.

Thanks,

Leo

Yes I use this before and Mercurochrome and you just hold them so that the gills are in the water and then swab the spots with the blue making sure that the blue doesn't hit the gills. It will stay but you will need to swap everyday to get it to go away.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem. THe Melafix didnt work so I used the Jungle fungus stuff. It completely wrecked my whole tank cycle so *definitely* do not use it! I think I'm going to use the blue method too.

jsrtist: Thank you for the response. I have a couple of questions. So the jungle fungus wrecks your biological filter, but what did it do for your fish? Did it help them at all?

Thanks,

Leo

Yes, I had to say that it helped the fungus. There's still just a trace of where it was but it could be a scar. I actually only used the medicine for 2 days before taking it out (you'er supposed to do it for 4 days) so I guess it does work. But I dont think it was worth the price of wrecking my tank.
