Do you deal with Nitrite spikes the same way as dealing with Ammonia spikes? (small daily water changes and constant monitoring of levels?) I noticed today a .50 ppm Nitrite reading in my 20 gallon (and have never had one before) that's all. Thanks!!

Yes I would treat that problem with water changes and water paramater checks weekly or bi-weekly until it's at zero. And then I would test again after that to make sure.

Is there anything new with your tank or anything that was added that could have contributed to a spike?

I agree water changes are the best way to deal with it but you may need to change more water. I think if your tank is heavily loaded with NitrIte you should do bigger daily water changes in order to dilute it back down to safer levels to protect your fish. Small water changes will only dilute high levels of nitrIte slightly. I think anything over 0.3 requires a bigger water change, maybe even 50-75% or the levels will keep building. Be guided by your test results. smile.gif

Like Barbara says, is it a one off spike or is the tank still cycling? smile.gif
