Ok small problem. My algae eater has cleared the tank of all algae however I can't seem to create any for him fast enough.I'm concerned as he appears to be chasing my poor female betta as a result.I put plenty of fish food in as she only only takes a small ammount from top and he gets the rest.I even put algae wafers in as well.He never bothered her when there was plenty of algae. No wonder she is getting stressed I get plenty of algae in my other betta tank but not hers.Any ways I can encourage algae growth.
He isn't being territorial as he has plenty of hiding places and she never goes near him.

If you have anything in other tanks with algae on, like a big rock or something, you can stick that in there for him to 'clean'.
He should eat some cucumber or something.. boiled zuccini..
How long do you have the tank light on for?
Blue
I already transferred rocks from my other tank that had algae on hes sucked them all clean.
My tank light is on from 5pm to 11pm
Didn't think he would eat cucumber tho I have found that floats.

Try blanched zucchini. Most fish just love it. Buy a small zucchini. Cut it in wedges and either cook them in the microwave in a bit of water, or boil lightly. Cook until they are softish. They will sink when they are cooked enough. Leave the skin on. Algae eating fish love the skin.
I drop zucchini into my tanks about every second day.

Please let us know if this helps smile.gif

Thanks guys think I will give cucumber a try as having a salad tonight too hot for anything else.Do I have to boil the cucumber?

I have never tried boiling cucumber to see if that will make it sink. I would give that a try. When the veggies are a bit softer, the algae eaters like them better. Also, you can add some tomato, my algae eaters really like tomato. I find that if I take out the seeds and then lightly cook it, it will sink. If it doesn't sink, kind of press it with your fingers, and generally it will sink. Also, lettuce is good, mainly things like romaine or the darker types of lettuce (not iceberg) or beet greens. These also will sink if they are very lightly cooked. You can also freeze leafy things like lettuce and that will make them sink.

Good luck, and please let us know how it goes smile.gif

Latest update I watched my algae eater attack and injure my betta he has ripped a hole in the middle of her tail fin and also ripped her dorsal fin.I have now removed him from her tank and put him back with my male betta. There has been a stand off between them but I'm closely watching them. His tank is full of algae so heres hoping things settle down.If not could I put him in with my plec in my 50 gallon safely. As if I can't get this sorted I will have to rehome him and I don't want to have to do that I like the wee guy.
Tried cucumber and stuff didn't work even algae wafers not working too good.

Chinese algae eaters can often become very aggressive. You may have to house him alone or with only very small, very fast fish. They often harrass other fish to suck on their slime coat.

He has now been moved into the 50 gallon tropical tank so now its a waiting game.

Please let us know if he behaves himself. smile.gif

Well he's still misbehaving. He's chasing some of the fish around especially if they come near him when he is sucking on the glass. He tends to steer clear of my 8inch common plec tho. This morning I did a head count on the neons and cardinals as he seems to have it in for them.Luckily most of them slept by the plec as thats were most appeared from this morning.
I dread getting up in the mornings to be honest after what it did to my female betta who has now calmed down stress bars are gone she even hand feeds and she never used to.
I can see in the future as this little guy grows he's going to have to have his own tank or be rehomed as I do not want a cannibal in any of my tanks.I hope I'm wrong tho.

He wont stop though Blue. You will have to get him his own tank or give him back to the pet store and see if they have siamese algae eaters instead.

That's the thing about those Algae Eater's,they're known for being grouchy ,bossy, and just plain nasty. I had Mr. Magoo for about 8 years, and was lucky for most of the time. He'd chase other fish out of his way and be done with it, but When he got to be about 5 inches or so,he did start actually jumping on the Goldies if they got too close for him. blink.gif He had a ton of personality and charm, but it got to where he just could no longer be trusted. Extra algae may deter him for a while, but unfortunately,if you have that prob now,it will only get worse. sad.gif

Its funny I've had 3 of these chinese algae eaters in the past never any problems tho one disappeared into my dolphin shark which later died as a result.
I can't figure why I have got what I would call a devil algae eater compared with the docile ones from the past.
I am toying with buying another tank but I may resort to a divider as being forced to move house in a couple of months due to renovations starting on our house. It will be bad enough moving 5 tanks of fish the QT will just be emptied prior to the move.

You were lucky with the other ones I guess. As we all know, each fish is able to have it's own personality, but in general, they do have a reputation for this.Hopefully you figure something out. smile.gif
