40gal tank - 4 fish - 10x filtration - 50% water once a week

my large comet who is soon to move to my pond has always had dodgy fins...he'll get white bumps, frayed bits and red streaks from time to time and i've always put it down to the fact that he was kept in poor conditions before i got him and he spent a year or so in an unfiltered bowl when i first got him and didn't know any better.

the past week he's had another "outbreak" as such but what he has this time is something i've never seen before...it's a bit of a fin-like growth coming from a thickish part of his tail...here's some pics....

you can also see the kink in the bottom of his caudial fin which he's always had, he has a thickening of the fin in this area too.

any advice on what's going on would be most welcome!

Thanks

My comet Glenn has growth on her tail that looks like that. I think it's just their fins growing as the fish grows.

oh, i hope that's all it is then!

i just find it strange that it's growing out from the rest of the tail...it does just look like a bit of tail though!!

On Glenn, the growth is really wispy, though she can move it. I don't think she uses it to swim though.

I'd get some pics of Glenn but she moves way to fast to get a pic of her.

i know what you mean i went through so many pics trying to photograph my big comet too...good job i've got a digital camera!

the growth on mine is thickish...but then it is on a thicker part of the tail!

i don't mind him having imperfections as long as it's not anything harmful!

Looking at the pic in your sig, I'd say it's just fin growth. Those are pretty fish.

Thanks Anic.... i'll have had "Big Fish" (the comet with no name laugh.gif) 7 years today - the 12th!
Better feed him peas for his birthday rofl3.gif

Tiko the black moor i've had 18 months or so, Keiser the fantail and Garfield the oranda i've had since october!

The other two in the sig are no longer with us i'm afraid...

they are cool fish though...very entertaining!
