Is algae a problem in a tank? I'm noticing a build up of algae on my fixtures. Is this a problem?
Fred Sambo
it happens. a little algae is OK.

just be sure that your aquarium isn't in direct sunlight during the day, because that will cause the algae to take over. you can scrub your glass with one of those magnet thingies the day before a filter change.

You can either buy you an algae eating scavenger,or you can but algae treatment real cheap, that is if the algae bugs you-Winston

A little algae is beneficial. I forgot why but I read it in a book somewhere, I'll go dig it up later.

It's a nasty little thing isn't it? Algae photosynthesizes in the day, but grows nocturnally, and it's really annoying. However, algae is algae....

Just a reminder to anyone who buys an algae eater to not get a common pleco. smile.gif Just go into the compatible fish forum to see why.

Algae is beneficial because, like any other live plant, it helps remove nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia and use them as nutrients. But my understanding is that you have to have a good size colony going to benefit from this.
