I have a rock, thats much to large to boil.
I found it down by the creek ages ago, and its been sitting around the house since.
I sumberged it in hot running water in my bathtub, but after I took it out it smelled kinda chalky and musty.
Is this normal?
Any insight is appreciated.
Fisherman
Please don't put it in your tank. The chalk and musty smell indicates that it will spoil the water in your tank.

I had a feeling.
Thanks!

Yeah,Don't put that nasty thing in your tank. There is no telling what disease it may have with it.-Winston

I have other rocks from the creek that don't smell bad.
Plus, they are small enough to Boil!
How about those?

PLEASE dont put that smelly thing in the tank, who knows what could happen ill.gif . What you can do is buy a really big pot laugh.gif

This thing was like, akward shaped, and almost the full length of my tank.
A bigger pot like that wouldn't fit on the burner. rofl3.gif
I hadn't actualy planned on putting it in the tank, but decided to clean it off and have a look-see.
Turns out what I found was negitive, so thats a no-go.

Winston, I've used rocks from the creek before with not adverse affects.
From what little experience I've got, and what I've read, some rocks are cool and others will make muck of the tank.
I'm going with river rocks because when I upgrade I'll have a pleco, and I don't think really that he'd like a bare bottom tank.
Gravle, if I can find the grain size I want will occompany them, so I can plant the back wall of my tank.
It'll be the first time I try real plants, and before I put the fish in, I'm tempted to let them fill out so If he decides to much, there will be plenty to sit there and look pretty after.

Come to think of it now, I need to know where I can buy a peice of drift wood, or if (I doubt it..) I can make one of my own.
Is petrifyed wood the same as driftwood?
Is petrifyed wood classified as a rock?

Oh, Winston, you said you have a website?
It its okay with the mods could you post the link?
I like poking around the internet.

I don't think he can post the link but he can pm )although I think you both need 200 posts) or email it to you.

I was just going to say that i have a pile of river rocks in my tank, and all I did was use the vinegar test (if the rocks bubble do not use them) and wash tem really well, then boil them and they have been no problem in my tank. Be wary of using small gravel that can get caught in your fish's mouth though too.

Have fun decorating!

petrified wood is a rock. Drift wood is wood that has been sitting in the bottom of a lake. Make sure your driftwood when in your tank stays 100% covered by the water at all times so it doesnt rot
