I think my tank has finally cycled . But now I am having trouble with green water. I thought it was just cloudy, but when I looked at it better it was definitely green. I did a big water change yesterday and added prime and am keeping the salt level at .3 percent . I keep the temp at around 76-78 degrees. I have a 20 gallon long, open topped tank. I turn the light on about 6:00 am and turn it off around 10 pm . I have a topfin 40 hob filter,an aquaclear heater, and run a bubble wall. I have a bare bottomed tank.I feed omega one flakes, peas, and frozen brine shrimp. I hve two small orandas in the tank.
my water params are
amonia-0
nitrite-0
nitrate-.2
ph-8.4
I never see green stuff on the walls of the tank , but there is slime on there I have to scrub off with an algae remover pad when doing water changes. I have tried leaving the light off during the day and opening the drapes , where the tank would get some sunlight but not direct. but this has not helped eiher

Hmmm, I just saw your other thread about adding chemicals to help the algae problems. I was assuming you meant the kind that grows on everything...sorry!
I have not had to deal with the green water issue, Riz would tell you to keep it though! laugh.gif
Seriously, the only way I have heard of people being able to clear it up is with the UV Sterilizer. Good luck with it, hun.

I had that problem once and eventually used a chemical treatment because no amount of water changes seemed to help.

Another tip that is very useful is to invest in some 'micro' pads for your filter. They are so fine and designed to collect even the smallest floating particles in the water, such as algae. I use the AquaOne brand but you could ask at your lfs.

Yes green water can be very good for goldfish, its just us humans that don't like the look of it. Personally if I could get my tank to do it I would.

But the best way to deal with this is actually a UV filter biggrin.gif

U might wanna try and try gchen's less food method. Seems to be clearing his pond of greenwater alright.

Oh and I think the light might be on for just a little bit too long.

I use nutrafin waste control to break down and clear all algae on my gravel and tank sides in tank I have no algae eater in at present. As its an organic waste eliminator its pretty much harmless to my fish.
As I personally don't like my tanks looking green.
