Hi members,

I am using hikari oranda gold now and it is finishing soon...i want to try using sinking food as my ranchu doesnt seem to like floating ones..

so i am deciding either hikari lionhead or saki hikari fancy gf food...

anyone used both before and any suggestions or comments of it?

too bad at my place there is no progold...

your comments are truly appreciated...thanks!!
mrbumblebee
I use Hikari Lionhead and I have used Hikari Oranda before but I've never heard of the other one so I can comment on that one.

Lionhead and Oranda pellets are basically the same nutrionally except for one floats and one sinks. If your fish are enjoying the Oranda pellets anyway but you just want to swap to a sinking pellet (which is preferable in terms of preventing consitipation/swimbladder problems) then I'm sure they will love them.

Lots of people use Hikari Lionhead and Oranda on here and get great results on colouration and growth, but you do need to supplement it with other stuff to add variety.

You can get more information and a nutrional breakdown on the Hikari info site. As you know Hikari can be quite difficult to get hold of in some places. Is that other one readily available as I've never seen it around?
There may be another member on the site who has used it smile.gif

I've just noticed your location, so you probably don't have trouble getting Hikari products in that part of the world smile.gif Some lines of a brand are not always exported worldwide so it may be that we don't have it in the UK, but I'll keep a look out for it

Hi bumble bee,

below is the picture of it..they have 2 versions one if for kois..this one has the ranchu pic on it...

it has wheat germ, probiotics, hikari germ and etc that will help the fish to digest etc...

IPB Image

yeah i want to change to sinking to reduce the bubble eating thing...

i ma using hikari micro wafer and bloodworms..do you think it is enough for varities? what do you use?

over here, we cant get progold at all..i want to try that though...

will hikari lionhead help to promote headgrowth alot ?
jason_yyl
the 1kg saki hikari is around usd30 and the 200g one is around usd8 if converted...its more expensive than hikari lionhead in terms of weight per dollar...

if the saki hikari helps i wont mind spending more! =)
mrbumblebee
Ok, I've never seen that in the UK. It sounds like a good formulation though. I've never tried it so I can't say whether it's good or bad, but it does sound like a very good quality food.

So, maybe you could buy the smallest bag of each and see how you get on with them or try them seperately. You may find it hard to see any real differences as they can be very subtle and the core elements of these foods are usually the same. They sound quite similar, though I'm not sure about the probiotic bit, does Hikari have that in their formulation?

Hikari Lionhead is supposedly specially formulated to promote wen growth in Lionheads, Ranchus and Orandas and is a very complete food so I think it definately helps, although as I'm sure you know the rate and extent of wen growth depends on various other factors, gentics being the biggest factor, although nutrition is also very important.

It sounds like you are providng variety by using agae wafers and bloodworms and these both help to develop colouration and promote growth smile.gif

Oh, and you can try fresh vegatables and peas too smile.gif

that was the info i got from some website, now my fish has got headgrowth on the forehead but it is not spreading to the sides yet...so hopefully the saki hikari would help it as well...
yeah perhaps i shall try it and see if there is improvement...=)

hey i am not using algae wafer..that is for bottom feeders...i am using the micro wafer..
mrbumblebee
Sounds very impressive! biggrin.gif

Spirulina algae wafers or flakes are good thing to add in to the diet, worth a try too

Saki hikari is formulated to give weight on a fish, that is the most notable aspect of saki hikari on kois. however I'm not too sure about the color enhancers, and I'm more then positive bloodworms as a growth enhancer would do better so don't rely too much on saki hikari as the only feed.
jason_yyl
hey i just bought it yesterday night(the 200g pack), and i fed it to my ranchu..at 1st he rejected it..then slowly he gobbled it all up...this morning when i woke up,i found that his poop was back to normal(the brown color ones) after nearly two weeks of having white transparent poo!! i was wondering if it is a coincidence or is it due to the probiotics and hikari germ in the food???!!

maniac,
i am not sure too...but i will post some results on it after few months!! =) , i am using bloodworms too...

bumblebee,
yeah the description sounds good but still to early to tell now....hopefully it will be good!! =)

how good is progold compared to the rest?? i want to try different kinds of fish food....

Heya!
I've been using the Saki for about a month now, and it's awesome. I've been putting some serious size on my baby ranchus with the Saki. you made a good move getting that. It's got a seaweed binder, which apparently is better than a wheat binder for fish with floating/digesting problems.

I had floating problems with accouple older ranchus and it went away immediatly once I put them on the Saki, with frozen bloodworms, frozen brineshrimp and spirulina.
jason_yyl
yes glass,

its awesome!! but i heard JRL is much better. too bad i cant get it here!!

how much does it cost you?

i noticed that saki hikari pellets releases small tiny bubbles after it sinks into the water. i always put it into a cup and sink it all and make sure that the bubbles are all released before pouring them to the tank.

I've heard the JPL is a great food, yet comparatively close to the Saki, but I've never used it . . .yet! The one that's suposed to be lots better is the n700, that's what I've heard, anyway. I've got a bag of n700 on order, but don't know when I'll see it. I went with the Saki because it has such a small pellet size, my young fish were able to start eating it much earlier. It was $40 for 1 kilo, and $5 shipping.

The Saki seems to have less airbubbles than some pellet foods I've seen. Yeah, I've done the swish-and-pour before, but not really much lately. Does your Saki package say what size the pellets are? My says "sinking pellet baby stick" It's really small. Maybe that affects the airbubble.
maniacholic
JRL has slower wen developement but is said to be better overall. Body mass, color etc
BadBoyzon9
what is JRL?? oh ya, did u c the growth improvement on ur goldfish after feeding Saki-Hikari fancy gf? Did u c a better growth rate than Hikari Oranda gold?
