Of course they will only stay in this tank until they outgrow it (it is a 40 gallon square tank), but aren't they beautiful! I have always wanted one or two and I have done alot of research on them and that is why I have waited so long. Also, I have not been able to find one that I really liked, but this type is just fantastic. I fell in love with them as soon as I saw them. My husband fell in love with them too and he is not a fish person. He agreed that he would help me with these guys!! I kept going back to the store and telling myself "If they are still there once I get the tank up and running, then I was meant to have them, If they are gone when I go back then it is a sign that I wasn't ready". I know that is not a reason to get this type of fish, but I have wanted one for several years!! Yay!!

Nice oscars, look like commons (they won't keep that pattern). Lets hope they get along
Fish Lady
Actually the were sold to me as Zebra Oscars. They better be or I am going to take them back. By "common" what do you mean? No offense to anyone who owns one, but Tiger Oscars are not my favorite pick. And why won't they keep the pattern? I have researched as best I could on everything I could find and they look like and are suppose to be zebras. The other oscars at other stores look nothing like these.

Awwwwww...... they're so cute when they're little... they're cute when they're big too, but especially when they're small. I dunno if they're common or tigers either. They look a bit like both. Cute nonetheless. You'll need about a 120 gallon for them though!!
Fish Lady
I got the 125 already, but other fish are in it at the moment. I will be moving fish around soon! I looked at a different website and it also has them listed as zebra oscars. I will not take them back (of course, but I will be very mad if they were sold to me as zebras and they are not). You may not be able to tell from my pictures, but they do look like zebras and if that is also a common then I am ok with that. They are beautiful gold, black and grey. They are soooo cute..I just couldn't resist them. They are lighter in color when they are out in the open. They turn darker when I go over to the tank. I read that they do that because they are scared. Is that true?

They look like common oscars I wonder if zebra is just a fancy trade name for them just wondering
Fish Lady
I am posting two links (hope they work). I really want to know what kind they are. I wil not take them back! I have fallen in love with them no matter what kind they are, but I would like to find out for sure. What do you all think?? I will try to get a better picture of them. They have started coming out of the log at long periods of time now so I may be able to get a better picture. Thanks for your help in identifying them!!

I would like to see a adult as both of those seem to be juvis and juvinile common oscars look like that

Zebra oscar is the same name as tiger oscar or common oscar. They are striped as juveniles and once adult they become the common colour you see in pet shops.

I had an oscar for 10 years. That is how I got the 75g. He would wag his tail when he saw my husband. Im not kidding. He "killed" at least one heater a year. We had to put large rocks on top of the tank cause he would zoom around the tank and then try to jump out threw the glass.
Finnally my husband decided he needed an even bigger tank and gave him to a guy with a 120 gallon with the pl*co that lived with him. He was 16 inches long. I still miss him. He would eat out of our hands and would rub up aggainst our hands when we cleaned the tank.
You think goldfish are messy they got nothing on an oscar. But even so they are a great fish to own. Unfortantly they well lose that color and unless you got really lucky and have a male and a female you'll need to house them seprate at a later date.
They sure are cute.

I don't know anything about oscars, but they are too adorable heartpump.gif I love that second pic heartpump.gif

Yes they are cute at the moment. Soon to change once they become monsters!!. I don't care if they lose the colors that they have, it just makes me mad that the pet stores say what they want to say when they could just say "I don't have the answer, but if you like I will find out". They have started to become calm and they swim up to the glass now when I come in the room. Wow! I hope mine are as friendly as yours was, but I also hope they do not get to be 16 inches long!!! Did yours have a name?? And thanks to all of you for your compliments!!
Hidr
Sure he had a name. It was Oscar. rofl3.gif And his Pleco was Felix. wink.gif

"Zebra" is just a fancy name for a common. Common oscars are not really all that common, you are much more likely to find some of the other color strains on the market. They are called common because they have the same coloration as wild oscars, some people just use the term "zebra" to attract people, sounds better than "common" They are not the same as tiger oscars though.

Here is a young wild or "common" oscar.

exactly.gif Sandtiger you are AWESOME! Thanks for posting the photo's . . . it really clears up the issue doesn't it? A picture is worth a thousand words or more! Thanks!!! I had been following this thread for some time.
Fish Lady
Sorry. I have been working late every night!! Yes, thank you sandtiger. The common oscar is exactly what I have. They are beautiful. Thank you for your time in finding those pictures for me. I tried every search that I knew and couldn't find anything more than what I posted. I found another one that I want. I was told that it was an albino oscar, but it is yellow with black fins. I don't have a picture because it is still at the pet store. What does that sound like? It looks like an oscar, but not an albino. She said that it would lose the yellow coloring and black on it's fins as it got older, but it is the same size as the other albino oscars in the tank and the coloring looks nothing like the albino oscars.
sandtiger
Most "albino" oscars are not true albinos, those are actually pretty rare. What are sold as albinos are what most oscar keepers call latinos. They do not loose the color as they grow. In fact, if anything they gain more color. There are both albino reds and albino tigers.
