Anyone know if you can use that pillow/cushion stuffing stuff as filter wool?
Its not got any chemicals or anything on it has it?

Its just I really need some and I cant get to a fish store for a few days, its all we have..

or is there anything else i might have around the house i could use?

Its okay as long as you read the package carefully to make sure it doesn't have any chemicals in it or if it has been treated to prevent mold/fire.

I dont think we have the original packet, its just a bundle of cotton in a plastic bag sad.gif maybe I shouldnt risk it if i cant find the label.. is regular cotton wool ok? or un-used dish sponges?

Sponges are ok but make sure they dont have soap in them. Ive noticed some come new with cleaning agents inside.

It should say that on the packet right? or it would smell.. I'm gonna go smell some sponges in a minute laugh.gif

I suggest for people to use only aquarium stuff made FOR AQUARIUMS! This really minimizes any risks. What is the fiber for? I woulldn't use kitchen sponges, especially for media because they could have had soap on them in the factory and they are absorbant. I always suggest a Jungle algae scrubber from wally world that costs about $1

Lucy, get it wet and squeeze it, if the water coming out looks soapy thats a dead giveaway. smile.gif

Hi Lucy, there was a similar thread to this in the DIY forum the other day about using wadding fabric as poly pads for Juwel filter systems.

Some materials, unless specifically designed for long term use under water in an aquarium setting can change the water chemistry, usually the pH and Kh. I'm not sure I would risk it as it's hard to know for certain unless you test it first smile.gif

Just promise me you won't go in the store and sniff sponges!!! LOL!!
