It says its made from soya or something, so I'm assuming there are flavourings to make it taste like bacon. Are flavourings safe for fish?

I agree, bacon contains very high levels of sodium, not sure thats too healthy for goldfish in the long run

Lots of sodium and preservatives in bacos. Not too god for humans let alone goldfish! I would advise against it.

Bacos are vegan, and the BITS now have no preservatives, but they do contain untested genetically modified ingredients, have a lot of salt (I won't even feed my fish salted peas) plus they are hard enough for me to chew so I would probably not give them to my fish for that reason alone!
115mg of sodium per 18 Bacos'bits, so that would be a little less than 10mg per baco, too much for my fish, imo. The bits have no preservatives but the chips do.
Ingredients in Bacos BITS: defatted soy flour, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, water, salt, sugar, natural and artificial flavor, artificial color and Red 40 (other colors may be added), soy sauce (water, wheat, soybeans, salt) hydrolyzed vegetable protein (corn, soy, wheat)
Ingredients in Bacos CHIPS: defatted soy flour, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, water, salt, sugar, natural and artificial flavor, artificial color and Red 40, Maltodextrin, dextrose, tocopherol (preservative).
Article on Bacos from Food Safety Network:
UK SUPERMARKETS CONTINUE TO STOCK GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD
BETTY CROCKER "BACOS" PRODUCT CONTAINS GENETICALLY MODIFIED SOYA
November 8, 2000
Genetically Modified Food - UK and World News
Further to Sundayıs reports about unapproved GM maize found in
tortilla chips in UK supermarkets, additional investigation has
revealed at least one product on UK supermarket shelves which still
contains Genetically Modified soya.
The product, "Bacos", is sold by Asda, Co-Op, Tesco, Safeway, Sainsburyıs and Waitrose. Despite all of these supermarkets choosing not to use GM ingredients in their own brand products, they continue to allow this product on their shelves.
Bacos is manufactured by General Mills, Minneapolis, USA, using Genetically Modified soya, in several forms, in the ingredients.
Marcus Williamson, of gmfoodnews.com, asks :
"If GM ingredients are not good enough for their own brands, then why do these supermarkets allow other products containing GM ingredients on the shelves?"
Greg Dawson, speaking on behalf of Sainsburyıs, has stated :
"Our commitment has been pledged to our own label products so it is possible that we stock brand products with GM ingredients."
Sainsburyıs recently ran a high profile advertising campaign in its stores
stating "No genetically modified food where you see this label", referring
to the Sainsburyıs brand. This latest discovery of a product containing GM soya appears to contradict that advertising campaign.
Marcus Williamson continues :
"There have never been any independent safety tests of the GM soya and GM maize on the market today. I have been asking Sir John Krebs of the Food Standards Agency for many months for evidence of independent safety tests of GM foods. It seems that no such evidence is available.
If the supermarkets do not keep the food supply clear of GM foods, we will see another BSE in years to come."

I agree Lucy, even "treats" should be healthy and balanced and provide something more positive to a pet than just tasting good

Winston, there are treats that you can give your goldie that are especially made for them and much better for them. Look in the petstore in the food isle and you will find quite a few. My goldies love the sundried baby shrimp treat. There are some people foods you can feed you golides but some of them you deffinitely should not feed them. There is a list of some of the people foods you can feed on the site and how to prepare them. here is the link .
