i know making gel food is really basic, but the problem is that most gelatins require hot water...i was just wondering if using hot water to make the food will cause any chemical changes in the antibiotic contained in the food.

i know that heat alters the physical structures of certain molecules and am afraid that using medicated pellet food to make gel food is going to be futile because the heat from the water used to dissolve the gelaton will render the antibiotic useless.

any thoughts? thanks in advance.

I personally don't think making medicated gel food is a good idea. Besides the concern of hot water rendering the antibiotic useless, getting the crushed pellets evenly mixed in the gel food could be a problem. And on top of that you'd be diluting the concentration of the antibiotics which would require that the fish eat even more food to get the proper amount of antibiotics into its system.

Bak2It has a point, and if you wonna make the medicated food taste a little better for the goldfish, try soaking it a minute in either clam sauce, or rub it a bit in garlic. Although once the fish has it in its mouth, he might remember how nasty some of that stuff actually tastes.... rolleyes.gif

certain medication requires that the medication is active in a designated spot like say the intestines. they were made to activate after soaking up a certain amount of water. mixing liquid gel will lower this time and cause the active ingredient to dissolve either too early or too late once in the water.
