I have some (a whole bag really) of Hikari algea wafers left over from my pleco I no longer have (yay gave him back to the lfs so I wont have to worry about him sucking on my moor) I was wondering if it would be ok to crush them up into finer pieces and use them for my moor. he seemed to eat about as much of the one I gave the pleco as he did and the main ingrediant is spirulina which i know can be good for fish, it has fiber or protein or something like that right? Also I was wondering if anyone ever used anti-bacterial or anti-parasite food pellets as a preventative measure rather than only once the fish got sick. Would it be a good idea to add some to my food regimine say a couple times a month or is there some reason why that would be bad? I found some that said could be used to prevent parasites/bacteria but I wanted to ask the all-knowing goldfish gods here at kokos before I did anything. Thanks!

U can crush the wafer up, but I prefer to give it as it is. Ur moor will have fun sucking and nibbling at it.

About anti-bacterial food, I suppose it's not harmful if u give it occasionally. I'm a bit suspect what it'll do to the immune system though. Better wait for more experienced guys to come and comment on this one smile.gif

I wouldn't feed medicated food as a preventative. I don't know a lot about the disease world, but I don't want to risk creating another medication-resistant bacteria or parasite.

I agree, I wouldn't personally use medicated food on a regular preventative basis (even if it were readily availble in the UK) I think the key to keeping your fish in good health, as far as food is concerned is to ensure that you feed a high quality, varied diet and are aware of constipation/swimbadder problems.

Most goldfish absolutely love algae, so I'm sure your Moor would appreciate the algae wafers on a regular basis as a supplement to his staple pellet/flake.

You could break them up and pre-soak them to make it easier to eat or he may just love fighting it the way it is as it usually softens very quickly.

Spirulina Agae is very beneficial nutritionally, it keeps things moving through the digestive system so helps to prevent constipation and swimmbladder problems. It's also a natural colour enhancer, but not sure how much difference that would make to a mainly black fish! It would help to keep him in very good condition though smile.gif

Goldies love algae too. I use to have two cory cats and when I would give them their algae wafers the goldies would swim down and take muches off it too. the Hikari ones slowly soften which is good. I used to break the wafer into fourths a put in different spots in the tank.

Will putting algae wafers in the tank prompt additional algae growth in the tank?

No, the algae is no longer alive.

Like God Ryu says, the algea in algea wafers or flakes can not regrow as algae, but of course if you overfeed or feed excessively any type of food, your nitrAte levels will increase and that can prompt algae growth in a tank, but as I say that goes for any type of fish food smile.gif
