I purchased one of the 10 gallon tank setups from Petco, its a Topfin and it came with a hood, filter, lights etc. Everything seems to be ok so far, I have it cycled and I just put my first fish in today an app 2 in black moor. I am wondering if the filter that came with the tank is good enough for long term use, he seems to be spending a fair amount of time at the surface and I am afraid he might not be getting enough oxygen. I dont know right now the number of times in cycles or whatever but like I said it came with the tank and all it says on the filter is top fin 10..what do you think?

I usually have 2 filters in each of my tanks.Don't know much about U.S filters.I always put a separate airstone and or a bubblewall in each of my tanks ensuring plenty of oxygen. So I suggest maybe putting one of them in if your worried about oxygen.I would do a test on your water tho in case your water params are causing him to spend alot of time at the surface.

1. If it is TopFin, it is the same as Whisper and was bought at PetSmart

2. Whisper/Topfin is made by Tetra which is made by Aquaria which makes Bio-Wheels. The penguin series is great, but the Whisper series is farrr better IMHO, and if Whisper is great, so is TopFin. I have a TopFin 30 that I used on a 20 gallon for about a week and I love it, but I needed more GPH so I got an Aqua Tech 20-40 which I love. It isn't 200 GPH, but it does pump more. The TopFin that comes with the 10 gallon pumps 90GPH which is okay, but I prefer the Whisper or TopFin 20 for a 10 gallon tank which pumps 105 GPH.

I have 4 aquatech 100 gph and an aqua clear 200 on my 29 gallon, I have to extend the intakes down all the way but It is well worth it I think, I will take my ammonia levels tomorrow and see for sure though!
