Full Version: My Betta Is In Love :)

Ok, completely normal behavior, but I'm very amused.

I posted on the forum before about breeding my big male, but have since decided against it. After much research and looking I realized he is not true blue, but steel, so I couldn't get the colors I wanted. I also see he has some abnormal finnage and although I love him and I think he's a great fish - he shouldn't be bred.

However, after deciding this I went on a betta shopping spree. I bought an imported green male crowntail from an exceptional fish store. On the way home we, high on new fishiness, went to Petsmart where I was digging around and found - at the very back - a very pretty turquise purple with definately purple points, he's so cool smile.gif

We also bought three females that night who died a few weeks later of some unknown cause. Well, we bought them knowing other fish in the tank had ick, but I decided to buy them and treat them myself because they were such nice girls. So it could have been that or?? I don't know. We had them in a big tank with a heater and the water tested fine so who knows? The first bettas I've ever had die on me :/

Anyway, last night I found myself a new girl:) She's a blue combtail:)

I got her all set up in her new home and decided to move my crowntail male next door.

All sorts of love at first sight. My crowntail is definately my least active fish and he's also rather sullen most of the time. I gave him a plant and he wouldn't go near it... that sort of thing. So I was extremely pleased that within 5 minutes of seeing her through the glass he was displaying his finnage (though not flaring, which is odd because he flairs at ME if he feels in the mood!) and being very interested in her. She also likes him and was showing her finnage. It was very adorable.

I moved their tanks apart so they wouldn't wear themselves out but this morning when I got up I saw that my crowntail apparently, with this beautiful woman on his mind, was very busy last night. He has constructed a full bubble nest that would put any breeding pair to shame:)

This female is too young to breed, she's much smaller than him and doesn't look to have any eggs so possible breeding would be very, very far off. Plus I don't know if crowntails and combtails are really anything that would be desired in my area.

Ahh well, I'll let them be in love:)

How are the lovebirds?

Oh, still hamming it up with each other:)

The female is doing great and is now eating betta crumbles and bloodworms, she was a very picky eater for a while, so I'm glad she's turning around for me.

The male seems to have gained a TON of color since being in sight of her. He's now a deep green and red:)

I'm a little heartbroken. I recently found out that "Angry Fish" my roundtail (sorry, I made the mistake in my earlier post of calling him a crowntail - I WISH!) is imported from Singapore. I knew that. Though I just recently found out that the reason the store imports roundtails is for betta fighting which is popular in the area around the store.

He's stout and strong and powerful and for that I like him, but I can't breed him knowing what he was made to be. And I can't sell his offspring if they might be used for fighting as well, especially short-finned offspring sad.gif

Poor Angry Fish... I guess maybe it's time for Miss Girl Betta to start talking to the other boys:)

Anyone know how crowntail vs. veintail is inherited?

Adrienne, don't tell me that people here in North America are fighting bettas sad.gif I didn't know that cry3.gif

When I bought my betta, there was a male with a short tail, now I feel like I should go and buy him. Poor fellow. I hope that is not his fate.

BTW, my new betta appears to be a very picky eater, too.

The plakats are sooo cool and I would love to get a pair to breed but that's the one thing that has detered me as well. If I bred them than some would have to go to the pet store and than more then likely they would be bought just to be fought and I just could let that happen. -sigh- stupid people fighting bettas messing up my plans.

When you breed a crowntail and a veiltail you get fishies with long tails like the veiltail but they're still a bit spiked like the crowntail. This is what a long of people call combtail. http://sourmilknightmares.unitedstates.com/Spike2.JPG that's a picture of one of my past 'combtail' bettas, I like to just call them all crowntail. It's much easier.

What a gorgeous boy! I just love his colours, and his combtail!

Oh no, I can now see that I am addicted to bettas, as well as goldfish ... this could be trouble rofl3.gif

Do you have any other pictures of your bettas?

I had no idea people bought bettas just to fight them. wtf up with that? thats just cruel. you go black oranda. You have common sense or you know something like that. what ever that saying is. I'm the dark angel but even i have limits to how dark i can be. I would never go out and buy fish or dogs or something just to fight them. it's just plain mean.

Touch of Sky, Glad you like that picture. That fish, Spike, saddly died soon after I got him. He was the first of what I believe was a tuberculosis epidemic. I lost a good ten bettas to it as well as two goldfish before I figured out what it was and was able to save one of my favorite bettas.

I actually have something like ten gazillion pictures of about 20 different bettas I own/have owned. They're extremely addicted. The females are a WHOLE lot of fun! They just seem to have so much personality! If you really want to see some more of them I could probably put some somewhere and post the link here.

The really annoying thing about betta fighting is that they're never going to get busted for it. "They're just fish." Fish have a lot more brains and feelings then most people....

Yes I know, I can't believe the store caters to people who fight fish :/ I know for a fact they wouldn't sell dogs for fighting or kittens to people who would torture them...

As far as the lovebirds...

Today I moved Angry Fish over to the dresser and put my veintail that looks like touchofsky's fish over on the bookshelf with the female.

He is flaring all over the place at her, and she's just sitting by the side looking at him, LoL. She's quite the little fish, very interested in the boys and seems to feel very safe knowing they are in another tank:) I was hoping to shoot a picture but it looks like the digital camera is out of batteries :/

She looks like she's starting to get some eggs... so I might be able to breed her this summer. I want to breed her to this turquise/purple/white male but I know my boyfriend wants babies of his, I must admit, very striking male. There is also the option... well...

I hate to support the store that sells fighting bettas... but he did say that if I came in on the first Monday of the month I might not have a hard time finding butterfly doubletails druel.gif

And if there's one thing that could strip me of my morals...

I am now examining every little betta I see in the stores smile.gif I know I will end up with a betta addiction. Heck, I think I already have it.
