Full Version: So Glad I Changed To Live Plants
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Goldfish plants, & how to set up a planted tank
jamoko
i've always struggled to keep my nitrates down and last week i removed all my artifical plants and replaced them with 6 live plants and i am soooooo pleased that today after a week my nitrates wer only reading 10 before i went to do my weekly water change!

Only problem is that my fish are treating the tank like an all you can eat salad bar! within 12 hours 2 plants where eaten completley and they are making a fine job on my lovely amazon sword ones!

Aww that's adorable! Beautiful fish! I love that telescope. I would love to have one like that one day. smile.gif

Wow sorry they are eating your plants. They look really nice in your tank.

hehe...they are a right bunch of characters indeed! very cheeky! yes i was wondering do the plants regrow once eaten severely? i removed the two grasses they devoired today as the wee roots had started to float around the tank...perhaps i was too quick to bin them?

weird! i have 4 goldies in my tank and had 3 plants in there. the last one i bought thought it would be a good source of food for them, but they arent really eating them up.

im not sure what kinda plants they are..im not good with names, but heres a picture

this is an old picture where i have my tank in the bathroom =P im talking about the plant in the middle. they are those really floaty type, the best way of discribing the plant is an super over size pipe cleaner.

When I first planted my tank, I only added a few plants here and there to help with nitrates. Almost all of the plants were devoured within the first week.

Beginning:

Before almost giving up, I read online some where(can't remember where) that when a goldfish tank is underplanted, a feeding frenzy will most likely occur. I decided to give it one more try, but this time with almost 4 times the amount of plants! laugh.gif

Now:

The plants still get nibbled on, but nothing has been destroyed smile.gif

Maybe if you add more plants to your tank (if possible), the destruction will decrease.

disaster999, that looks like ancharis...i have that and mine haven't touched it either biggrin.gif the ones mine gobbled over night where straight vallis...they loved it rofl3.gif

abby15, that's a great idea...i need more plants now anyway so i'll give that a go!
disaster999

Same here, well the moor part any way, I have anacarus and while my goldies chomp down on it some, I think if i keep putting enough in there the plants will keep up with the demand, though the goldies only eat it when they dont get flake food regular. .. . . like when my dad forgets to feed them.

yes i still have him (7 years next month) he was rescued by my dad from a play school who's abandoned him and his mate for the summer sad.gif he was 2& 3/4" long total when i got him now he's 7.5" long in the body + tail after that....he's a big'un rofl3.gif

he's heading for the pond when the water's ready...I'll worry about him outside and miss him from the tank but at his size he really needs out as he just outgrows every tank upgrade i do!!!

it's like "free willy" LOL!
Ponderosa Power
He'll love that pond, just visit him every day to keep him happy. The pond looks very "zen-like"!
