I finally found my honey gourami! It is not the wild type nor the man-made cinnamon red type. It is man made, but it is an actual honey color with bright red finage. On mine, the red extends from the anal fin in a wide stripe up the sides of the body. The petco guy said that they were "trying them out" and they were new fish, so I assume they will become more popular soon. The trip home, acclimation, and the introduction to the qt tank all went pretty well and he/she seems healthy and active. I'm definately keeping my eye on the fish though. The other honies were hiding and/or had very clamped fins. I wish I could take them all, poor things. I also saw the most emeciated fish in the same tank. I've seriously seen dead fish that looked better than those poor sharks

This is the closest to what I have. It is the same species and breed, but mine has a much brighter, deeper red in those areas.

I'm kind of worried that something is wrong with him. All he does all day is vigorously swim back and forth on the back glass wall. I mean, the only time he stops is at night and when I feed him. He doesn't really eat either. He has a good time going after all the flakes and daphnia, but he just spits it out. Is this normal?

Aww Kissy I'm sorry your gourami is having problems I'm no tropicals expert by any measure but it sounds a bit like a parasite doesn't it? Maybe someone who knows more about it can help you out but spitting out food and constant swimming sounds a lot like a parasite to me. but that's just my

Yah I was afraid of that

We'll see though. Some of my new fish spit out their food a lot in the beginning just because they were nervous.

Maybe it is still adjusting to the new home? My tiger barbs swam back and forth along walls and corners for the first couple of days when I moved them from a smaller tank into their new 20 gallon.

I hope so Michelle. For now I will be extra careful with that tank (psh, like I wasn't before

I am one of the most illness-paranoid members on this forum when it comes to fish). I've got 5 or 6 types of parasite medications in the cabinet just in case.

Are gouramis tolerant of salt? I'm thinking of raising the salinity just in case.
EDIT: LOL I went to go see how many parasite meds I had and I had miscounted. If you count aquarium salt, I have 9 different types. Can anyone tell I had a lot of parasite problems in the past?

By the way....he or she still needs a name! Any ideas? I like names that are connected with nature (like Orchard

)

I've already got a pet named honey!

Here she is:

She won the photo contest at Petbrigade

I think she/he is doing a little better now. It still swims along the glass a lot, but eats now without spitting out much food at all. Everyone loves Daphnia!
I suppose I should decide if it is a male of female first before naming. Hmmm... I think I pick male! I was originally going to call him Ambrosia (perfect name for a honey gourami!!) but that seemed too girly once I picked him out. Too bad natury names are usually girly.

How about Pan after the Greek god of nature?
I don't know, lol, I am terrible at naming pets! I have a Calico cat named Calico for Pete's sake!

I've decided to name him Cedar. Thanks for all the name suggestions, I had a hard time picking because I had so many good ones to choose from. Thank you for all of your encouraging posts too. I'm sure you made my new fishy feels welcome now!
I think Cedar's going to be okay. He eats all of his food now and is starting to spend less time pacing the glass wall. Hopefully he is just not used to being alone in a bare bottom tank. I'll be out of town for a day or two, so I'll update again soon

Edit: Jen is that Calico sitting in the tiny box in your avatar? That's so cute, my cats do that too. They aren't quite calicos but are are tortiseshells. Still, one's named Turtle

Turtle also has a certain fondness for tiny boxes!

He's dieing now

This morning he wouldn't eat and now he is lying on his side at the bottom of the tank. The water params are perfect so I don't think there is much I can do at this point since I don't know what to treat for and his illness is progressing so rapidly

Jun 26 2006, 09:42 AM
oh, thats not good

You could try a guess.. possibly a treatment that does multiple things, maybe try an antibacterial thing, its probably internal. hmm..
Has he got any other symptoms?
Ponderosa Power
Jun 26 2006, 09:57 AM
Symptoms: pacing back and forth on the glass, slight color fading. I don't see anything visibly wrong so I'm guessing it is some sort of parasite, internal or microscopic.
I have quick cure, aquari-sol, parasite clear, prazi, aquarium salt, coppersafe, and paragon 2.

Jun 26 2006, 10:24 AM
I dont know what most of those do. But I'd go for one that is gentle but effective, and would treat anything internal or external.
Once a fish stops eating though, it doesnt look good
Ponderosa Power
Jun 26 2006, 01:37 PM
I dosed with parasite clear since it treated a wide variety of internal and external parasites, but he died a few hours ago. I noticed a little while after I dosed meds that his belly was protruded a little, so I think he may have had an internal bacterial infection.
Rest In Peace, Cedar.
