One of my bettas has finrot (Cupid), he has had it now for almost 2 weeks. I have tested the water over and over and ever thing seems to be fine, i have a airstone and heater, all working normally. He got it when i added new plants and rocks to his tank, i cleaned the rocks in hot water and the plants were from my 30 gallon. he is doing really poorly, over half is tail is gone and now other fins are showing signs of tearing. i have meds in the water and i really just don't know what else to do. should i add salt? He is still eating, and i don't know how but he can swim just fine.
Thanks for your time.

Is he still active? What meds did you put in the tank?

Yes, he is acting just the same as he always has trying to fight the bubbles from the airstone. I just checked on him and he made a new bubble nest. Right now the only med in there is Maracyn-Two.

Okay i know this is random, but i put rinrot as the title, rolleyes.gif is there anyway to fix that?

Lol I didn't notice the type. If you pm a mod and ask nicely, they may change it for you.

That's good that he is blowing nests and eating/acting well smile.gif

How long have you had your betta? Did you move him from another tank or just put in the airstone? Anything else that could have upset him? Is there anything remotely sharp in his tank? How lopng have you been medicating? If the maracyn has no effect, I would finish up the round of meds, and then give him a break with clean water for a few days. After that, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallong. Make sure it is dissolved in water before you add it to the tank. Watch him closely for the first 15-20 minutes to make sure he does not react badly to the salt. If he's okay with it, add another 1/2 teaspoon per gallon and you will be at .1% salinity.

Also, remember that fin rot heals slowly. Once it is not getting worse anymore, that means that the infection has most likely stopped. When the fins start to re-grow, clearish yellow tissue will be seen first.

LOL No problem, I fixed the title. I still knew what you meant, though! wink.gif

Thanks for changing that!!
I moved him from a gallon bowl to a 2.5 tank. i think i found out how he tore his fin, he swims between the tank and the heater, and it is a tight squeeze. I got him for Valentines Day, so i've only had him about 5 months. tomorrow is the last day for the maracyn, but if he is doing better show i leave it in?

If he isn't showing any improvement (or not getting worse) by now, I think it would be best to discontinue the treatment after tomorrow. Also, if you think he could have torn his fins then clean water is the best thing, maybe with a tiny bit of salt.

Is the space tight enough for him to possibly get stuck? I can't imagine a betta tearing a fin on a heater and I'd be more worried about him getting stuck and burning.

His fins stayed the same only for a day they are getting worse. He can fit between the heater ok, i'm not worried about him getting stuck, but i might put a sponge or something there just in case. I am going to clean the water and add alittle salt and see how he does.

I'm so glad he's doing better now! Keep up with what you are doing and he should grow back at least most of his tail. biggrin.gif
