So I am finally, actually being able to set up my new tank now! I decided to use some larger river-type rocks as a substrate although I don't think I will cover the entire bottom. I found out that my mom had just what i was looking for in her backyard!

So, other than cleaning them really well and making sure that there are no sharp edges, is there anything else to do to make sure they are safe for the tank? Are all rocks basicallt safe if they are clean and smooth? Thank you!

Here is a nice thread about testing various rocks for capatibility in your tank:

The other suggestion I would have, is if you wish to disinfect the rocks, do not soak them in any bleach or PP solution. Rocks may be very porous and it could be difficult to completely clear them of the toxic stuff. Instead, boil them at a rolling boil for 10 minutes....

Thanks daryl! I am having trouble with the search feature for some reason-I knew this question HAD to have been asked before but it wouldn't come up. That ios a great resource, I couldn't remember if it was vinegar or muriatic acid you used to test the rocks though.

Thank you for the tip on not soaking them in anything chemical...I was looking at sme of the rocks and thinking that very same thing. So boil them I shall!

I am SO close to having this tank set up, finally! banana.gif

LOL, now I feel even dumber realizing that that post was PINNED!

Where is that smiley that is smacking itself in the forehead when I need it?

"What's for supper, dear?"

"Nothing - just rock soup!"
