I have read koko's article on fishless cycling and have just bought some ammonia to add as she suggests....how do i calculate the ammount of ammonia to add to a 300gal pond, to get it up to 4.0ppm of ammonia?

Thanks in advance!
sandy
I will be building a 500+ gallon pond sometime and wondered about that as well. I think Im going to add some old media from my external and add a couple of fish to get the bacteria built up slowly that way.
For adding ammonia I reckon you are talking bottles of the stuff arent you.
Hope someone answers it for you soon.

thanks sandy, i have already added dirty sponges and water from tank changes, as well as feeding the pond fish food and adding a filter start and all my levels are still at zero unsure.gif

my fish will be in quarantine another 18 days and i'm worried the pond won't be ready for them!!

i'll add the bottle in bits tonight anyway and test as i go then i can get more ammonia tomorrow if necessary!

well i did a wee bit of research online and found this site

si metric

so they say to acheive 1ppm per litre you must add 0.001 grams of the chemical

soooooo

0.001x1500Litres =1.5g of ammonia to acheive 1ppm

i want an ammonia reading of 4ppm so

1.5x4 = 6 grams ammonia = 4ppm in my 1500L (330gal) pond

so it looks like i only need a tiny tiny amount not loads like expected... i'll keep you's posted!

well i dosed the pond 3 hours ago and just tested there now

it's reading as 1ppm of ammonia, and i've dosed to achieve 4+ so i'll re-test tomorrow night and if it hasn't risen any higher i'll up the dosage!

I'm just pleased to finally get a reading laugh.gif

well i just retested tonight and the ammonia reads 0ppm sad.gif

I'm gonna start another thread now as it appears i have "green water" .......
