I have a black moor who was in my pond, the pond crashed so we pulled the fish out, he seems to have rubbed off his black "skin" in places and its silver underneath, What should I do to treat him, and more importantly will he be okay in the tank with the other fish untill he gets mooved back into his home?

Can you tell us what your water params are? We really need to know the level of ammonia, nitrItes and nitrAtes suggest a good treatment to help you out. If you don't have a test kit a lot of pet stores will test your water for you for free.

Are the scales just gone or is there more injury to it then that? If the scales are the only problem you can add a teaspoon of aquarium salt for every gallon of water your fish is in. Make sure its aquarium salt, regular table salt will hurt your fish. The salt acts as a stress reducer and keep bacteria at bay so your fish can heal faster and with less chance of getting an infection.

Please post back ASAP with your water params. Treatments won't do any good if your params are bad. Perfect water conditions are the best thing to helping to heal a fish.

The pond peramiters are sickening, but the temporary tank perams- runs to test water. . . .

The scales would have fallen off if the stats for the pond are way off.
Like tanks they need to have their water changed to keep levels steady.
If the water he is in is good quality and you can keep it good then the scales will take several months to grow back if they do.
Are there any other fish in the pond, if so what are the parameters and you will need to do lots of water changes to bring them in line. Do you have a filter on the pond too?

Amonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20
alkilinity 120ppm
Ph 7.2-7.8
10 gallons (temporary!!)
7 fish total (four moors two calicos one gold) (there in from the pond while I build an indoor tank to keep them in Untill the pond recycles,)

one lesson I have learned poor planning premotes poor preformance! had I planned out things properly (and been a little more educated at the time) I would have cycled the pond first before ever adding fish. . . unfortunatly now I have a disaster on my hands, I have to build a 90 gall tank, and cycle it quickly, any other suggestions would be welcome. It seems to only be the scales missing, I think the little guy likes hiding in the rocks in the pond and rubbed them off trying to get away from the net. Should I purchase any other products such as stress zyme or will the salt water do?

salt is an amazing fix all. If the missing scale area is not red or bleeding then you might be ok. But 7 fish in a 10 gallon ouch.
maybe try to get a rubber maid tub to put some in. just have more room. Since it will be so crowed in the 10 gallon the poor little moor may not get better. scales will grow back on their own in perfect water, hince the overcrowding....
FinnyFinnedFriend
whhoo I am a bad mommy!

I think that is what I will do any advice for rubber maid tanks?

Cause I need to get it to cycle FAST!
sarahelizabeth.d
i am a bad mommy too due to overstocking. but i do a lot os water changes.
just eh good ol rubber main tubs you put clothes and crap in. maybe a clear or close to clear one just so you can watch....
really up to you. then you have a rubber main tub you can use for water changes......that is what i do
FinnyFinnedFriend
thats great, thanks, but dont rubbermaids bow out?
sarahelizabeth.d
aww good question.
i have read on here that you can get some kind of large rubber band or that rope thing you use to tie luggage onto you car. it had like a hook at each end and it is strechy...i know a terrible description.
anything to keep it tight. humm now i am at a loss...maybe place it next to a wall to help on side. ok now i am just not being helpful.
i will think on that
Ranchugirl
Only the real big ones will - I have a 55 gl that does that, but a pair of bunchie cords will correct that little disadvantage. The cords will hold the longer walls of the rubbemaid in place.
I'll put y our thread into the emergency section, so it doesn't get lost in the normal discussions... smile.gif
FinnyFinnedFriend
thank you all cry2.gif: my fishies will live on!

so then should I buy a regular aqarium filter for it?
sarahelizabeth.d
yes can you use the one that was in the pond or did you have one?
FinnyFinnedFriend
and what filter would be best

No the pond filter has to stay in the pond to cycle out the pond. . .

They love the pond and I intend to let them live there durring the summer lol! I think they just like hiding in the rocks, I am gonna cycle the pond then let them live there

my fish are sooo spoiled in some ways, I have spent over 500 dollars on them, and the price tag is getting higher, the sad thing (for my pocket book any way) , I will pay anything for the health of my babies!

I just wish I knew what I know now when I started cry2.gif:

Runns off to buy tubs and filters

How are things going?
FinnyFinnedFriend
It varys from day to day, right now I am doing a water change, I have to find a better filtration solution for under $50 and it seems the moors are infected with ick, i am having trouble telling on the other fish because of the different colors on the calico. I am going to have to ether build a plywood tank, or figure something out because this just isnt working and my babies being sick just kills me
FinnyFinnedFriend
It wouldnt be so bad if I hadnt already spent an excessive amount of money on them, but I have almost used up all my grad money on them. . . .
FinnyFinnedFriend
pet co has a 300 gph filter on sale would that work better along with the already purchased filters?
LaurieP
Hmmm, good question.

As long as you have 10 times the filtration per hour you should be good. (10 gal tank should filter 100 gals an hour for example).

I know it is frustrating getting everything all set up right. Hang in there.

unsure.gif What are you using to treat the Ick?
FinnyFinnedFriend
right now only salt, I tried to place an emergency order I was getting a few of those small plastic totes you can use for small animals and a few underwater 3 gall filters, so I could cut down on the volume of water I am treating, I was going to get Quick cure but do you know of something better? and should I treat the larger fish as well, they dont seem to have it but the youngerones do
FinnyFinnedFriend
thats the problem I havent been able to go out and purchase anything, I am gonna have to treat two 15 gall tanks. . . . and I dont know if the meds will mess up velvets injury, his scales fell off on his face just in front of the gills and just behind the gills, the water perams are fine, unless I bought two bad sets of tests. . . .
FinnyFinnedFriend
cry2.gif: why cant I get this right? I have been up all night keeping an eye on them, and it isnt working. . . I cant get meds because no one wants to drive to the petstore. . . . I am going to call my Boyfriend and see if he will help tomorrow morning, I need to get a python to assist with the water changes, my methods arent working. . . and I need to set up a tub to treat water for water changes. . . . I am doomed and my poor fish, I took out the plants because they had these odd brown things on them that would sometimes come off, and I dont know if they were the source of the ick or not

It just gets worse and worse as the night goes on, the ick is every where, and seems to be spreading rapidly both tanks are contaminated, and whats worse because the filters are fairly new they havent finished cycling yet. . . I need help
Devs
unsure.gif CAlm down-take a breath, Salt is one of the best/safest treatments for Ick. Do you know the proper amounts and how to use it ? You'll need to salt to 0.3% in order for it to do good against the Ick.
How did you end up with 15 gal. tanks-did you get Rubbermaids? What filter's did you end up buying for them? Any heaters on the tanks? Are you still salting these tanks as we speak? unsure.gif
FinnyFinnedFriend
the second tank is salted, folowing the regular instructions for aqarium salt and I have no way of knowing what the levels in the first are as I have been doing regular changes and accedentaly forgot the salt. . . and they are rubber maids with two filters each regulated for 5-15 gallons, and listed as 100 gph but I am really doubting this as the water in all but one is at a steady trickle and I am in the process of ordering a couple of penguins which cycle at about 350 GPH I had trouble with the ordering because the bank is being a pest about something. . .

I folowed the one tablespoon per 5 gallons

and no I just salted the second because I just did a full waterchange.

lol, sorry I get overwhelmed when everything goes wrong at once, but my boyfreind should be here sometime to take me to get the meds and a python.

so with fifteen gallons, what do I do to get the water at .3%
FinnyFinnedFriend
krazy.gif Thud.gif No heaters, the water stays at a pretty constant 60 most of the time, but it got up to about 70F last night, I left my lights on and I think it affects the water. should I purchase a heater and more importantly will it maintain a constant temperature shutting off so as not to boil my fish?
FinnyFinnedFriend
Okay heres an update on treatment, I decided to start fresh! I have water at about neutral PH, (my water out of the tap is between 7.2 and 8.2) Treated with a tablespoon of salt for every five gallons, Aquasol and start right. temp ranges between 60 and 70 degrees farenheiht. I solved the issue with the filters not pumping water at their optimum, I had mechanical filtration spounge rubber banded around the intakes, and it was filthy (after 2 or three days of being in the tanks!) should I rinse the spounge and replace it or just use the guard provided with the filters?

I will post tank perams as soon as I finish water testing and change out.

I know this is a bit late to post but I just made it back to the boards. A cheap way to go for fliters and things it to Comparsion shop with PetSmart. They will even comp their own online adds. I just bought a $50 filter for $20 that way. Just a little food for thought. I know what its like to spend more than planned.

Good luck with your babies.
FinnyFinnedFriend
two of the moors are getting better now, the pond fish are all well and back in the pond but a calico died due to improber coverage of the pond, ( the way my dad covered it drained the pond almost completely!!)

my three moors seem to be better, thanx for the advice on comparison shopping!
