I just got my gH test kit yay! I didn't REALLY need it...I needed kH but I got a discount if I bought the two together, so why not? So I've learned the instructions are a bit more complicatd than the basic masterkit..
It says to add one drop at a time, capping and lightly shaking after each drop, until it turns from orange to green. The kH was very sudden and clear, but the gH was not so. I have a water softener so I know it is pretty low. When I add the drops, it starts out as a very pale green (you can tell there is a bit of orange in it) and as I add more, it slowly darkens. How do I know when to stop?

Kissy, all the kH and gH test kits do a lousy job at checking water with low mineral levels. With the API gH test kit, trying to tell if the sample is green or orange after only one drop is just about impossible. The solution is just too diluted to tell if it's orange or green. About all you can do is hold the test tube up in front of a piece of white paper and guess. If your water was harder the color change would be as distinct as what you saw with the kH test.

M'kay thankyou Bak2it. I guess the gH test is not all that important because I know its not going anywhere with a water softener.
