Ok I hope this won't quadruple post like my last attempt!! laugh.gif

I just purchased a large (30") piece of driftwood off Ebay. It hasnt been cleaned. Now Ive heard that boiling the wood steralizes it but I dont have a pot big enough for a 30" piece of wood! rolleyes.gif Ive heard that you can bake it in an oven to steralize it? I also know you have to soak it for awhile. I will be using my empty 30 gallon for that purpose. How long does it usually have to soak to be waterlogged? Any advice is much appreciated, thanks guys!! biggrin.gif

The easiest of course is to just boil it.That not only kills everything that may be on it,it also releases the tannin's that tend to turn your tank into tea-water.
I do remember a few years back of reading where someone baked theirs in an oven at 200 degrees for most of the day-the inside of the wood has to hit the same heat temps as the outside. You just have to keep watch that nothing sparks up. yikes.gif I've actually done that with Tree Branches for my birds before and it seemed to have worked fine. laugh.gif
Do you have any idea on what type of wood it is?

I have no idea what kind of wood it is but here is the auction, maybe seeing the pic will help to identify it!

OK so I put my wood into my spare 30 gallon and its floating. Do I have to weigh it down with something? Also how long does it take to be waterlogged so it'll sink?
daryl
Depending on the type of wood as well as multiple other factors, it could be days or weeks.

Thanks daryl. I have no idea what type of wood it is. It is however, very light. Im thinking of soaking it in SUPER hot water in the bathtub today then putting it back to soak in the tank. I have it weighed down with a rock right now to keep it under water.

Well its not sinking anytime soon so can I attach it to some slate and bury the slate in the substrate? If so can I use regular old aquarium sealant for this?

smile.gif Hey Erin, Riz has mentioned using a glue stick for gluing stuff to go into the tank. I have also read that people use the aquarium sealant for things like that. So I guess its whichever you want to use.

Thanks vmlola! I think Id rather use the sealant as I know its water and fish safe. smile.gif
