I have cloudy gree water. My tank isn't cycled yet, but ammonia is kep to a minimum.

10 gallons, one 2" Black Moor, Valentine.

The water is so green I can't see any of the wiring behind the tank. My mom says that if it isn't clear and pretty by the end of the week, she's giving it (and Val!) away.

I can't afford a UV sterilizer, at least not for now. Is there any other way to clean it up?

There is a product called AlgaeFix that works great with only a few drops. I believe there are a few others on the market but this is the one Ive used with great results.

Is it okay for non-established tanks?

Yes. Just dont use with crustaceans, shrimp, lobsters ect. You just have the moor, right?

On the bottle it says to add weekly but Ive found that one application is enough. Ive had this tank for almost a year and have only used this product 2 times. I only do it if the water is horribly green, not to rid the ornaments, ect of algae.

Thanks! I'm hoping the tank will clear up in a few days so my fishy can keep his home.

Mutsukai mate, ur got greenwater (which is free-floating unicelluar algae) there. It's actually very good to ur fish and is a natural filter. But if ur mom doesn't want it to be green, then just cover the tank with a cloth for a day or two to not let any sunlight in and the greenwater should die out. Oh, switch of the tank light also if u got any.

You can also do a 50% water chang now, make sure your mechanical filter is filter properly and change 25% of the water tomorrow. Usually, algae is caused by excessive organic material, which in your case, I don't believe it is so unless you are feeding too much. Good luck at battling this, it shouldn't be that hard to do. I have to do this all the time to the tank at my local nursing home. They get green water because the filters quit pumping water over time.

Yep, I'd go with that water changing idea & I have both my tanks placed so that they are never in direct sunlight (algae's best friend) Also I have timers on my lights so that thru the middle of the day (when no ones home) the lights are off. They get indirect sunlight then so they aren't in the dark. This keeps it kind of under sontrol, plus I scrape the side while doing weekly water changes! And once a month or so during a BIG water change I wipe clean most of the decorations! Still it's an on going battle! smile.gif
