Any personal experience with these plants?
I was thinking of purchasing one or both for my fishtank so as to help manage nitrates (Or was it nitrites?)
Eitherway, It wouldn't be an excuse to skip water changes.
I have a 10 gallon for my Commet, and I wanted something live both because its benificial, and because its pretty. I'm liking the Java moss alot.

My tank dosn't get alot of natural light. Because I don't have a tank light, his tank sits under a lamp that's attached to the wall. It's a nook that was just asking for a fish tank. The Bulb in it now is a 40 watt soft. Or something. Its just a normal house light.
Do you think I'd be able to get a plant light in it so I could grow my plants and give my fish some artifical sun? I've seen bulbs that look like they could fit, but I've never been exactly sure.

I love the spot my tank is in.
The water sparkles and I can see him from the computer, and he's perfectly on display with the lamp that looks down on him like his own personal sun.

Java Moss & Java Fern should be a good addition, but beware if ur fish doesn't mind tough-leaved plants, he'll decimate the greens biggrin.gif

Oh He's perfectly allowed to eat the plants.
So long as he leaves something growing.

I don't know about that light...Is it florescent? Didn't your hood come with a florescent light? I see the spot where it should be, but no light.

Both javas should do wel in low lighting, as long as they have florescent light for about 10 hours a day. I think the moss does better at controlling nitrates but both are good. Both do better attatched to rockwork or driftwood. The moss can be floated at the top if you like too.

Edit: I have the windelov java fern. It is the same as a regular java fern but stays a tad smaller and it has lacy ends. I have it in a tropical tank and it is the favorite of all the inhabitants.

It was a hand me down from a friend.
He was going to give me the light, but he needed it for something, so let him keep it.
Floresent lighting?
I'll have to check. I'm at school right now.
If I don't have that, I'll have to go out and buy a bulb, now wont I?
This is a rather.. stupid question:
How much trouble will I have trying to find one that fits in that?

i have had a java fern for a while now, and have only just got flourescent lighting, but it grew anyway, as did my anubias (which i personally prefer as the leaves are broader, but that's just my taste!). It probably didnt thrive like it will now, but it definately grew, and sprouted more plants from it's leaves.
Before i got my new tank with flourescent lights i had a 20watt desk lamp angled over the tank (small halogen bulb)

the java fern doesnt taste very nice i dont think, so the fish dont eat them much. Although i have noticed a few of my leaves looking ragged and 'nibbled on'.
The anubias doesnt get eaten much either as the leaves are thick.

You will probably have a hard time finding that peice. What you need is the light strip and the casing it goes in. They sell replacement light strips, and hoods that come with the lighting attatchment, but not just that. Maybe you can pay your friend $10-$20 for that part? Unless he is using it for an aquarium or house plant shelf, he doesn't really need that shape or type, and you do. Buying a whole new hood for the 10 gallon (?) would probably cost $25-30.
