Flick is a three and 1/2 year old moor. He is in his own tank because his eyes are huge and his ex tankmates were getting to the food faster than he could he has been in his own tasnk about a year. Last week I noticed his rear end right before the start of his tail was looking a little ratty, so I treated with melafix thinking that would clear it up.
I looked closer the next day and saw that there wras a lump. a fairly large one about the size of a bb and today it lookes like it popped and a new one is forming. I am stumped . Other than that , he is eating and swimming normally, fins nice and erect. Any ideas?

Hi Barbara, welcome to Kokos.

I am not sure what you are describing but because it is only happening in one area and not multiple areas it sounds like you are dealing with an ulcer or abcess.
Multiple blisters are a symptom of swimbladder disease and sometimes also show up in dropsied fish.
I can't suggest anything further than to continue treating with the melafix and perhaps salt to .01%. If it doesn't clear up within a week you could consider antibiotic food such as medigold, in case it is a deep abcess.

Thanks, He did have a swim bladder problem when I got him , the past year he has been float free. I have been searching to find what the problem could be but the searches I have done have turned up empty. He doesnt seem to have any other dropsy symptoms. It is just strange that it could just pop up out of nowhere.

I recall reading something about bubbles and blisters on National Fish Pharamaceuticals. Try this link:

Thanks for the link! I think that the sbd may be the culprit, but I have never used or even seen quinine sulfate, have you? I wonder if a lfs would have it. I will have to do some calling around. If that doesnt help I think I will pull all of my hair out!!! I really appreciate your help! Thanks again.

I don't think it is available in Aust but you should find it in the US, can you order it from NFP? they sell medications.

I have to take quinine sulfate for leg cramps.. You use to be able to buy it on the self in the stores, but now its perscription only... They do sell it in small doses for cramping . but im not sure what the other ingredants would do to the fish

Stelzer water works the same way as quinine.. I wonder if that would help? does any one out there know? Or if it would hurt fish?

I dont know how long it would take to order, But today all the blisters have popped and the melafix hasnt done a thing, now it looks all red I just got hime from work and havent really had time to sit and watch, but I think he may have some itching. It is hard to tell because all there is in the tank are some smooth stones and anacharis. AHHHH. Thanks for the suggestions!
