I recently mysteriously lost all my fish from my 55 gallon when I went on vaction I came home they were covered in fuzzy stuff and shortly died, I did a 75% water change before I left. Well this evening I saw that my 10 gallon tank inhabitants have white stuff on their fins and eyes and I just did a water change on Sunday. Is it my water? I don't share equipment. and the params are Ammo ) Nitrates 10 Nitrites 0 and Ph 7 Do you think it's a fungus or bacterial? And my water is almost milky white.

Milky white water to me usually means that your tank could still be cycling or you crashed your cycle and it's started over. During the cycle it's normal to have clowdy water.. however just clarify this stuff for us first...

Is your Ammonia Level Zero? You made a typo so I'm not sure.... Please do another set of tests and repost. Thanks!

Ph Level is low in my opinion. However is this PH consistant? A consistant Ph.. high or low can be ok... if it's consistant. Up and down ph's are bad Please test the ph of your tap water before putting it into the tank, and then again after it's in the tank.

How long has the tank been running?

How often do you change the water and how much? You said that you changed 75% of the water before you left on vacation. Do you normally change this much water when you do water changes. It's a bit much in my opinion. 20% is my rule.

How many fish in the tank and their size?

What kind of water additives or conditioners?

Any medications added to the tank?

Add any new fish to the tank?

What do you feed your fish?

Do your fish have bloody streaks in thier fins?

I don't think I was very clear sorry, My ten gallon tank which houses two fish a 2 inch oranda and a 1 1/2/ inch pearscale is the one with the problem. On Sunday I did a 50% water change in that tank and now the tank is cloudy and there is frothy stuff on the top. I also thought maybe I crashed the cycle too but the params are Ammo 0 Ntirates 10 (they were 20 hence the water change) and Nitrites 0 the ph is 7 and it stays constant. The tank has been running for a 1 and half but not always with fish it was oringinally a snail tank, the first fish has been in there since the fall and the second only for a couple of months the tank was cycled when I added the first fish. When I went to look at my tank the fish ahd white stuff on their fins and cloudy eyes. This is a lot less severe than what happend to my fish in the 55 gallon which I lost. I had done a 75% water change in that tank before I went on vaction and when I came home they were covered in white cottony stuff and had blood streaked fins. I added Maracyn II in that tank the next day but I eventually lost all of them. I am concerned that this is a pattern with my waterchanges. I am leaning toward a fungal infection but am not sure. The only thing added to the tank was Ammo Lock to decholorinate. I change the water 25 % twice a week because with two fish in a ten gallon the nirates get high so I change it often to keep them under 20.

Hey, someone else recently had this problem after water changes, same symptoms, deaths and they suspected their batch of ammo lock (I think that was the brand). This is rather co-incidental.

I'll need to find that other thread to make sure I've got my facts straight.

Otherwise I'm at a loss except to say a mysterious outbreak of fungus or bacterial infection. A photo would help to identify it.

I cannot find the other thread so if anyone can remember, it would be appreciated. The symptoms were the same in 2 tanks and we first suspected a pH crash but that was not the case.

She was using two bottles of ammo lock and noticed that one smelt a lot stronger than the other bottle. We will never know for sure what happened but she emailed the manufacturer and they agreed to replace the ammo lock.

I think this is that thread you are looking for: http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/...topic=46458&hl=

Hope it helps!

YES! ... that's the thread I was looking for, thanks a bunch Jen. So it was in Tanks and Equipment, I looked in 911, D&D and Water Chemistry.

Let us know what you think Maceo.

Wow that's crazy! I think I am going to stop using the Ammo Lock just incase in thatwas what killed my fish in the 55 gallon. I think I've surmised that the 10 gallon fish had ick I got home and saw it had spread to the oranda's body and really looked like ich. I treated with Jungle's Ick Clear and it seems to have done the trick. I think I caught it early enough. Thanks for the tip on the Ammo Lock I really think that may have been what did in my other tank. Oh and another quick question the box of Ick Clear suggests following up with Fungus Clear to prevent a secondary infection what do y'all think? My fish are little and I worry about so much medication.
Fishmerised
Yes, you could follow up with Jungle Clear, ich has a horrible habit of coming back again. Another suggestion is to salt to .03% for a couple of weeks. That's 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon on day 1, 2 & 3.
Maceo
Thanks Fishmerised I'll try the salt. They are still looking good, the spots have cleared and they are still eating like little piggies. I picked up some Prime at the Pet Store last night and threw out the Ammo Lock just in case. Thanks for the help biggrin.gif

I hope they stay looking good and you don't have any further problems. smile.gif
