My betta, Trogdor, seems to be losing some of his brilliant color. When I got him his body seemed to be a nice blue and red mix, but now, especially around his head, it looks dull and brownish. It may just be my imagination, but I don't think so. Do you know what could cause such a thing to happen?

im sorry its happening to your fish, i hope someone more exsperianced than me comes and tells you why

He could be losing his color because he's stressed. How's your water quality? What type of set up is he in? Also what are you feeding him that could have something to do with it. Betta's like variety and a lot of protein.

How long have you had this fish? They will fade and change colors slightly with age. Also, what kind of lighting are you using?

I've had him for about a month or so, maybe a little longer. He was in a quart betta bowl, but I recently upgraded to a 1 gal tank so he could have a little more room to stretch his fins. it just has a single bulb, I am not sure of the wattage. He seems healthy enough, just a little duller in the body. His fins are still very vibrant, though.

My suggestion is try some blood worms, my betta loves em and it might perk your little guy's color right up. Though I do think if something was really wrong he would be losing color in his fins as well but I'm no expert maybe someone else will come along with a better solution.

maybe its something he has too little of in his diet if his fins are the same colour as before

How long has he been in the 1 gallon tank? Sometimes the move from one tank to another will stress out a betta, it might take him some time to get used to the extra space. It took my little guy almost a week to get used to his 2.5 gallon.

He hasn't been in there very long, only a few days. He started losing his color long before the switch. I'm actually hoping the bigger tank and the light will help him a bit.

has there been any change in his enviroment just before he started looseing his colour eg, different surroundings a new ornament ect
Ponderosa Power
do you dechlorinate the water?

It may be that the lack of colour is related to the problems you're having with his filtration as you said in your other post.

Bettas seem to be very sensitive to environmental changes. Maybe it's starting to stress him a bit. I think if you correct that, you can then rule it out as part of the problem. These things are often related.
