I believe the fish have to be at least a year old (maybe 2, can't remember) before you can tell what sex they are.

For me it's still hard to tell the difference. The only reason I know my fantail is a male and the ryukin is a female is they had babies and the ryukin was the one who laid the eggs and they were fertilized. Soooo with those 2 fish being the only fish in the tank, the fantail had to be the father.
