The lightbulbs went out on my 10g tank so i went to buy new ones.
These are incandescent 25W clear bulbs.
It was all good until at the end of the day i realized the water temperature was up to 84 degrees farenheit. Definitely higher than what it used to be.
Is this temperature still ok for my gf or are they too high? Can I lower it by getting bulbs with less watts?
Thanks!

Goldfish can survive at these temps but you are reaching the higher extremes there. At these temps available oxygen can also become a problem.

I don't use tank lights at all in summer because it gets so hot, it's not really necessary unless you have plants that need high light. You could try leaving the lights on for only a few hours in the evening instead of all day.

I'm not familiar with incandescents, I just use aquarium brand flourescents.

Lower wattage will, of course, generate less heat. But you are still going to have an over heating problem. This is why incandecent bulbs are NOT reccomended for fish.

As Fishmerized has mentioned, your best bet would probably be either not to turn the lights on at all or for very limited amounts of time.....

Definately buy a flourecent if you can. I have found that it is generally cheaper to simply buy the entire 10 gallon set up with flourecent hood included than it is to try to buy a hood alone.....

Perhaps BigAls would have one for cheap....

i have a similar question...

i don't have air conditioning in my house, and lately (without the tank light on) the water temp in my tank has been around 80 degrees at the hottest part of the day.

i thought about moving them to the basement where it's cooler but i'm not sure if it will get too cold at night.

any advice would be appreciated.

thanks.
