Its a little planorbis ramshorn snail. They are commonly considered pest snails as they reproduce very quickly and can overrun a tank.

Hmmm.. uh oh??

Yeah, I hate to say it but you may also want to get rid of the trumpet snails. Ive never, ever seen anything that reproduced like them!! I like to tell the story of how I put a few in my tropical 55 gallon, and a couple years later when I tore down the tank, there were more snails than gravel!! It was disturbing… unsure.gif

Well I got the trumpet snails cause I heard they were good at cleaning up extra food and waste in the tank. I didn't intend on getting the other one.. she actually just put him in there. At least they were all free!

LOL Theres nothing wrong with them, its just that eventually you will wind up with, well, lots of extras! Some people like them. Ive kept all kinds of pest snails. The ones I really didnt like were the trumpets becuase they had extremely hard shells and were impossible to kill. They would even get into my filter and clog it.

its a ramshorn snail

Yes, we established that. smile.gif

Well I don't think they'll be able to squeeze into my filter so I have no worries with that!

What should I do with the Ramshorn? blink.gif I've already named him Shellbert .. I'm debating whether or not I should put him in the lake tomorrow if he'll be more trouble than help

He might not be able to squeeze into your filter, but if he lays eggs and they hatch, the little ones will be in the filter. Baby snails have a habit of getting into the worst places. blink.gif

Don't put him in the lake! You can't go messing with the ecosystem by releasing foreign animals in there. A band of water snails could devistate some other animal or plant that already lives there.

Throw him out to the birds if you don't want to risk him multiplying (at least one creature will be happy that way), or ask a garden pond owner if they want him, or give him back to the petshop.

Get it out, Get it out, Get it out! I made the mistake of keeping one and I had to take apart the entire tank to get rid of them and they were even in filter. I thought I could easily spot the eggs but oh no I was vastly mistaken!

Lol,
It's a snail! Snails are part of the ecosystem... and it's a big lake.. I highly doubt they could devastate the whole thing..

If that particular type of snail has already existed in the lake's ecosystem, then it's ok. But if it's foreign, then don't put it in the lake. Take cane toads in Australia for example. A few foreign toads can't hurt a huuuuge continent like Australia right? WRONG! They eat all the native animals and devastate the ecosystem.

Don't take chances, mate.

I was thinking of the Australia/toad example, too, D golem. smile.gif So very true how something so innocent can destroy a whole ecosystem.

You can just crush the snails for fish food or take them back to the store. ANy local pet store probaly wouldnt mind taking them in. I always had customers who were just thrilled to take the pest snails for free.

blink.gif If he didn't come out of the lake, please do not put him into the lake. That is how problems occur when species are introduced into the wildlife around us. There are problems with Apple Snails/Common Pleco's to name a few because people introduced them into our natural habitats.
