Full Version: My Koi Got Big And My Comet Is Suffering

Hello y'all.. this is my FIRST post! Yee haw!

My little comet goldfish was 4 when we got a koi 2 years ago. Now the koi has grown bigger than my comet goldfish.

Today I noticed my koi acting agressively swimming underneath my comet and trying to move him up. My comet is acting a bit ill and has been swimming/floating in various bad positions. The tank may have been somewhat dirty and I did clean it.

Anyone see a fish compatibility problem or just a dirty tank problem?

PS I just read one koi needs 250 gallons... oh-oh! I have my koi and my comet both in a 10 gallon tank...

I suggest you keep the comet in the 10g and try to find a new home for the koi, in the meantime you could put it in a large plastic/rubber tub with a filter.

Be very careful not to overclean your tank all at once. Do you use a gravel vaccum when you change the water? Water changes and gravel vac's should be done weekly, with only one comet in the tank you would probably need to change around 30% water each week.

Your comet may be floaty because of high nitrAte levels, this occurs when there aren't enough water changes. Try feeding cooked peas, popped out of their shell and squished so they fit in his/her mouth. This helps with some floaty fish.

Also when doing water changes give your filter cartridge/pad a rinse in the bucket of old tank water each week. This helps to keep it from clogging up.

Annette's right, you need to take that Koi out of there and find a new home for him. They can be quite aggressive, especially when they're fighting for space.
How big are these fish? unsure.gif

Ciao, I am very new to this forum and very new as well to goldfishes. I have 1 black moore and 1 telescope[bigger in size], the black moore is sick and the other one pushed him around a lot (at first I was thinking to help him move). I have a small tank, now I understood they need min.10 gals each.. I never thought that they'd bother each others for the space, but I found out here that it is one reason for them to mis-behave. and to get sick. anyway now that they're separated I see some 'little' improving in Cosmo [my black moore]. Good luck with your comet!!!! Many wishes - ciao ciao
