Full Version: Sink As Pond?

Hi everyone. I have a question about using a very heavy stainless steel sink as a pond. It is about 3 feet long, 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep-yes quite big- Is there any reason why I should not/ could not use this as a small pond if I figured out some filtration system.
The sink has a 2"circular hole in the back from where it was once attached presumably.

This is not a definite plan but a friend has this sink sitting spare and I was just thinking it might work as a pond....idd.gif

I am wondering about rain and drainage. I have no experience about ponds!
Any advise please?

Hmmn, stainless steel should be safe but I'm not sure. What you could do is line it with pond liner. Would that be possible with this hole that has been cut in it?

I agree with Annette - i'd line it well first. Fish and metal I believe should never go together....

Funny, of all the things that I was thinking the material was not one- that's why it's so good to share stuff here and get a different angle. Thanks gals. Well, I could line it with liner for sure and prob cover the hole...what about during heavy monsoon rain season that we get here..do you think it would be at risk from rust (even tho' covered) I wonder ......or any other bogiemen 406.gif

If the liner is applied properly then no water should come in contact with the stainless steel. I can't think of any other hiccups.

Well it's quite an eye sore as it is but with some liner and some foliage around it , it might be worth a shot this summer. Thanks for the help!

is it supposed to be in ground? If so what's the point of covering it with liner? Just put the liner right in the ground. If its above ground, well, I have heard of a type of paint for water gardens. It comes in black and blue I think. Its a water proof, fish and plant safe paint. I dont have a clue where you'd get it because Im looking for it too. I just dont see the point of buying a pond liner to cover the thing when you could just put the liner directly in the ground, minus the sink. Seems kind of odd to me. ANyway, maybe the paint would work to make it nicer, water proof and fish safe? You can always find something to plug up the drain with or any holes with. LIke for that hole, maybe a cut piece of plexiglass secured with black silicone then covered with the black water garden paint. Shouldnt be all that noticible. Id put whatever you use to plug it up on the inside so the water pressure can help hold it in place.

Good luck with that!

Hi Gia. I wasn't thinking to bury it because it's pretty deep so it would mean an awful lot of digging. The pond liner was because metal seems to be not a good idea (with rust perhaps?)for fish. Yep, the plug as U say would have to be on the inside.

Anyway about the watergarden paint- I've never heard of that- would be useful.

The paint you guys are looking for is... two part epoxy paint. You can get it at any marine supply store.

Since the sink will hold almost 90 gallons, you'll need plenty of filtration. You could use the hole as a drain for a drip style filtration system.

Well my point for mentioning the paint was that I think it would do the same thing as the liner. I think it would protect them from rust as it will keep the water from touching the metal on the inside. It supposed to be water proof. It would look a lot better than a crumpled and folded piece of liner shoved in there. laugh.gif

!!!! Thanks for the info on the paint! Ive been looking everywhere for it. I thought a hardware store would have something like that but no luck. So a marine store...sorry for sounding dumb, but is that a boat supply or pool supply store? Never had to go to one before so I have no clue. I need the stuff to line my filter with because it is an ugly bright red and it is going to be seen somewhat, so I wanted it to look better.

Good idea on the use for the hole, btw. biggrin.gif

I don't think that stainless steel rusts, does it? blink.gif

I don't know much about this pond stuff myself, But hubby just said it will not rust, Only when it come's into contact with other metals..Just backing what Erika has said mainly. smile.gif

I take his word for it, He works at a metal fab place.

Thanks everyone smile.gif .The paint sounds really interesting. No idea if I can get it over here but I will certainly look. As Gia said the pond liner, thinking about it- might be hard to get looking really good covering a smallish area thats above ground. So..Erika/FDella would I need the paint with stainless seel or not ?headscratch.gif

The hole as filtration point sounds very nice Bak2it. I'll have to find out more on drip style filtration. Also thanks for the 90 gallon configuration.

I do believe that stainless steel will not rust.

I really don't think you would have to paint the stainless if you don't want too, I would think that if you did it would eventually chip off anyway's...It should be fine on it's own. biggrin.gif
