hi, i have 14-15 4 week old gf fry in a 5 gal tank, half filled with water. I need to move them to another tank because the one they are in has a crack half way up the back of the tank there for I am unable to raise the water and i would like to add a filter to help keep their water clean. Right now they are in 2 to 2.5 gallons of water. I siphon their tank everyday. Is it ok for me to use a net to transfer them to their new home? I do not know how sensitive or fragile their fins are.

Also, how long can i leave an algae wafer in their tank. According to the hikari algae wafer package it says 2 hours.

thank you

When I transferred my fry (at about that same age) I used a small plastic cup to catch and move them. I think it's more gently than a net. Or you could try and catch them with your hands (which is what I do now that my fry is older) but when they are that little, it may be a bit awkward.

I'm not sure about the wafers but 2 hours seems kinda long to me . . . unsure.gif

hi, thanks for the advice on transferring the fry. As for the algae, I did leave it in for 2 hours a couple of days ago but was unsure if i should have taken it out sooner since they kept on eating it. They're doing great but I will not leave the algae in for that long.

thanks again.

How'd the move go, Karla? With Fantailfan's advice, they should be doing fine. Just watch the temperature/pH of the new water, it should be as close to their current water as possible. Those little buggers are so sensitive to different water conditions. If you haven't moved them yet, its best to put the whole tank they are in now into the new tank, including the water, and add new water over a longer period of time... smile.gif

hi, Ranchugirl, no I have not moved them yet. I will be moving them this weekend. Thank you for your and fantailfan's suggestions. I will let you know how it all turns out. biggrin.gif

Good luck with the move.

And, yes, do keep us posted!

I finally moved them biggrin.gif . Thanks again for all the advice, so far they appear good. After the move I felt bad because it was early morning so I gave them their brine shrimp as a treat for putting up with the move. I am slowly raising the water level to make it easy on them, but they are very active.

just want to know how long can i leave them in a 5 gal? there are 14 and they've already survived a month in 2.5 gallons of water with no filter or aeration. Some are half an inch. Now once the water is raised high enough i can put the sponge filter in for now until i completely clean the power filter. how many water changes should i do per week? I've been doing one everyday or every second day.

thanks

Great news on the move!! thumbsup.gif
The sponge filter is the perfect filter for them in this stage of their life - gentle, yet effective. I don't put a power filter on fry's housing until they are at least an inch big (without fins) and strong enough to swim away from the suction.
As for water changes, I would test the water every day, and change accordingly. Even if the water is always fine, I'd probably do 2 water changes a week. I always fed mine heavily, and they did need a few water changes a week. Fresh water is essential for them.

I am scared.
so you got 14? so cool! I would love to ,as most of us will ask, see pics!!!!!!!!!!!!
karla80
Thank you all for the best wishes:D so far they are very active, eating lots and growing. Good luck with this year Tazz Knight. smile.gif
I was really worried to move them since i was afraid of damaging their fins or shocking them but thanks to fantailfan1 and Ranchugirl's advice it really wasn't that bad. Catching them with containers was not that bad although a couple refused to cooperate laugh.gif . I was mostly scared of moving the water too much.

Good luck LuvMuhFred on the move, I read your thread and I wish the best to you and all your fry. heartpump.gif

They look great!! The only time I was able to get them all in a pic was when I moved them into a little container when I cleaned out their tank. The temporary container was small enough that the whole thing fit into the field of the camera. Otherwise, forget it--like you said, they move waaaay to fast!!

Well now that they are all set up and comfy in their new home, you'll have to keep us posted on their progress.

Good luck with them!
